So yeah, for you guys who have seen the Inquisition codex thingamob, took a look at it today and I'm thinking about using it as an excuse to model a commissar training squad.

The only annoying part is, well, the Inquisitor. Besides the mind bogglingly stupid fact that he's less than half the points of a lord commissar yet infinitely better, I'm kind of stuck figuring out what I want to do with him.

Part of me wants to just model him as a cool Yarrick knockoff, give him some cool stuff and a backstory (maybe even that orbital bombardment ability or something) and just never take a lord commissar when I run them. Other part of me wants to run him as a Primaris Pysker that can actually do something, but that seems kind of cheesy because I will be far too tempted to take that Divination table. Wish I could just take the training squad by itself, but oh well, that's life.

I'll be honest here guys, I'm really not looking to make a NOVA tier list or something here, hence why I put it in General and not tactics. This is really just an excuse to make the models. I already have models I could use for both "Inquisitor" options so it's really just down to which makes the most sense. For some odd reason I don't really want a regular Inquisitor guy, although I'm sure I'll get around to making one eventually. This is just "inquisitiors" that make cool characters that you would see in the Imperial Guard that you don't always see in the codex. Maybe there's a way to make a Lord General or something too, I haven't gotten to look at it too much yet.

Also, I'm really hoping the Ministorum priest option in the henchmen squad is something we can hope for in the next codex. His new abilities in that are pretty cool (he gets "hymns" that can really help his unit in close combat) I would happily pay 60pts for him with the rules he has in this little dataslate thing.

If you're not set on commissars, than you could easily make a rogue trader + retinue by using the Xenos inquisitor and warrior acolytes with Jokaero to represent stuff that they've got from the frontier, like the Jokaero could be a tech savant for instance as opposed to an actual space monkey for instance.

I'm not familiar with inquisitor rules, but I find it interesting that they are significantly better than a lord commissar & at half the points. Is it just because the IG dex is so outdated & lord commissars & other HQ choices will become more viable in April? I've been considering getting a inquisitor as its a great excuse to make an awesome mini:

It's because they can get divination (and thus prescience) for as little as 55 points.

Hmm, very interesting idea to use Codex: Inq as a 'build your unit' type thing. Might have a play with that myself. As for using IG characters, here's how I'd go about it:

Lord Commissar:
Power Sword
Carapace Armour
Bolt Pistol

Pros:
- He's cheap as chips, and if you want you can sprinkle on more options without breaking the bank.
- Ld 10 and Stubborn is nearly as good as the original LC's ability.
- Matches a LC in CC, only lacking the 5++. I know you don't take the LC for CC prowess, but it can put a nice kick in a squad.

Cons:
- not overly useful outside of Ld buffs.
- no execution rule (Although I'm sure you could house-rule one in)

Primaris Psyker:
Psyker, Level 1

Basically, a Primaris with better stats and far cheaper. No real pros or cons, and you can easily choose not to use Divination (although it's hardly game-breaking, just a litle buff for a unit)

Lord General:
Carapace Armour
Power Sword (optional)
Liber Hersius (throwing out USRs to reflect tactical ability)

Pros:
- very versatile and useful to an army.
- you could easily make another pseudo-command-squad from another Henchmen warband.
- pretty cheap for what he does
- can be the warlord

Cons:
- no Orders (although the Liber covers this pretty well)
- no meatshields by default, although it is doable.

hope that gives you some food for thought.

I think there's every chance we'll get a priest with those rules, as the SOB and Inq ones have been almost identical. And re-rolling saves on an IG blob will be awesome. Tarpit for the Tarpit God!

I like that idea for a lord general, I hadn't thought about using that rule. I've got the old Cadian commander from the metal command squad boxset that would be perfect for him.

The cool thing is just that the henchman squad is so flexible. You can make almost anything with a guardsman statline to use as a retinue. Most of these will probably only get used rarely, but it'll be a lot of fun to come up with a ton of unique modeling projects.
