I'm looking to get into ancients and ran across Pendraken. Color me confused, but what system are they using when they say "1000 pt army pack".
And what would be the difference between the 1000 pt pack and the smaller army pack. Is it sized for the system?

The 1000pts packs are for Warmaster.
The smaller army packs aren't for any rules system in particular, and are a nice way to build up the core of an army.

Do you know how they translate into Field Of Glory?

I'm guessing in how a 1000 pt Warmaster army from Pendraken fits the army lists in FoG. Your best chance of seeing how well that works is to actually purchase whatever FoG book you're interested in, look at the army list, and then see what's in the Pendraken bundle and how well they match up.

The large army pack looks like 1,000 points for Warmaster Ancients and the small pack looks like 500 points.
Looking at FoG, the Principate (early Imperial) Roman list in "Legions Triumphant"...
The FoG lists always give you a standard starter army and a main lists that has more variety and options.
Going by the starter list you need:
3 generals
16 bases = 4 battlegroups of legionaries
4 bases = 1 battlegroup of spear armed legionaries
8 bases = 2 battlegroups of auxiliaries
4 bases = 1 battlegroup of cavalry
4 bases = 1 battlegroup of light horse archers
6 bases = 1 battlegroup of light infantry slingers
1 camp
The base sizes are the same in both games (except generals). The number of figures per base depends partly on what scale you choose. 10mm figures let you fit more on the same size of base, of course.
The Pendraken 1,000 pt pack for Early Imperial Roman contains:
1 unit of AR13 Praetorian guard (30) = 3 bases
4 units of AR1 Legionaries (120) = 12 bases
3 units of AR2 Auxiliary infantry (72) = 9 bases
1 unit of AR5 Auxiliary heavy cavalry (12) = 3 bases
1 unit of AR3 Auxiliary archers (24) = 3 bases
1 unit of AR7 Bolt throwers (3) = 3 bases
2 units of AR12 Skirmishers (48) = 6 bases
1 General and legate = 2 bases
It's a pretty good matchup.
You've got enough auxiliary spearmen.
You've got enough light infantry skirmishers.
You could probably fiddle with the legionaries a bit to get 16 bases.
You need to thin out the auxiliary archers to get an extra base.
The bolt-throwers aren't in the FoG starter army but they are in the optional army list.
You need an extra general.
You need the four bases of spear armed legionaries (not sure what those are, TBH...)
You need 4 bases of light horse archers.
You need one more base of heavy cavalry.
If you get the 1,000 point army you could order some extra packs to round out the army to the FoG standard.
Automatically Appended Next Post: BTW you may find that 15mm is more popular than 10mm for FoG, but it depends on your local players.

Thanks everyone.
I ran across a website that gave me some more info on FoG basing and army size as well.
Our local group of players...I hazard to say we are so unorganized as to not warrent a "club" moniker...have been wrestling with something else to branch out into. Most of the guys have some kind of 10/15 mm historical army that fits into either ancients or reniassance.
We've been discussing rules sytems to use and have settled on FoG (I think, you know how unorganized, untrained primates can be at times) and I've been looking at eras that can bounce back and forth without too much hassle. I've semi-settled on Pre-Warring States Japanese/Warring States given that, if you aren't too much of a rivet counter, they can play both time periods.
I also want to shoot for enough to have two "armies" worth so that I can run some semblance of historical encounters with them for the times we look to do scenario based battles.
Unfortuneately our group had its old stomping grounds close and have moved to a new location that hasn't had the capital yet to branch out into stocking historicals. He can special order them, but doesn't have them on the shelf.
Again, thanks for all your help.

FoG is a good set of rules and there is a Renaissance version as well as the Ancients.
Like you say, if you do Japanese 1450 onwards, you can use a lot of the same models in both armies as long as you close your eyes to some of the changes in armour style.
You'll just need to buy ashigaru and teppo units for the gunpowder period.

tbh if you have questions, your best bet is to email Pendraken. They are very friendly and very helpful.
