I keep hearing how the Warp talons are the coolest looking yet some how awful units in the chaos codex, on paper they seem awesome, so why the hate?

They have a lot of issues with actually running on the table.
1)No shooting at all in an edition where the shooting phase is king and assaulting in general is awkward and unwieldy.

2)No grenades. Assault units without grenades typically aren't capable of doing what they're intended to do, which is murder troopers off objectives, because they're reduced to initiative 1.

3)Perhaps too efficient at killing things when things actually go according to plan. They tend to win the assault on your turn so they get shot to death on the ensuing enemy phase.

4)They do jack-all against +2 armor saves, and are worthless against vehicles.

I literally cannot think of a scenario where Warp Talons are worth it over even Raptors, and Raptors aren't worth it compared to Bikers. And bikers aren't worth it compared to Heldrakes. Fast Attack is the one slot Chaos Space Marines actually does better than a lot of other codexes, so the cost prohibitiveness of Warp Talons relegates them to the cool fluff/model category.
