Hi guys! I was wondering what 40k books the dakka community was reading right now. Any type of book counts from codexes to proper novels or series.

I finished codex Dark Eldar a while ago for the first time in a couple of months and also finished the word bearers omnibus. I'm currently on book 2 of the salamanders series. I would recommend the word bearers omnibus to anyone, one of the best books I've ever read.

Spoiler:
The ending of Dark Creed when Kol Badar the Coryphaus impales ashkaenz is particularly satisfying

Both of the Blood Angels Omnibuses, BA, Nilla and Angels dexes and the first Ultramarine Omnibus. Would highly recommend it, an excellent story.

I got about 120 pages into Siege of Castellax. It's the single worst Black Library book I've ever attempted to read, and probably the worst book I've read in the past 7 years. I wouldn't will it on anybody. It's horribly written, rife with sentence fragments, run on sentences, and hackneyed prose, has characters who don't act how they're supposed to (Iron Warriors who don't know their own defense networks, what up) and it's full of the absolute worst Cobra Commander-level villainy I've ever read in a book. After Aaron Dembski-Bowden got the Night Lords so right with hist trilogy, I can't abide reading about villains this boring and stupid.

I just got done with Betrayer, The Emperor's Gift, The First Heretic, (Aaron Dembski-Bowden) and Pariah (Dan Abnett). All great stuff.

I read a bit of it in a store once. This orkmoticon should be sufficient to show my feelings:

I don't know how bad it is, but I find it hard to believe it could be worse than the Soul Drinkers books.

Finished 'The First Heretic', it was an awesome read.

Almost finished 'The Outcast Dead', I think I'm enjoying this one even more.

I've read Scars (Chris Wraight) and I'm currently more than halfway through Deathwatch (Steve Parker) in January, around and just before Christmas time I read Gunheads (Parker) and Cadian Blood (Dembski-Bowden), as far as I can remember.

The first half of Scars was great, the latter half was a bit iffy up until the bit towards the end when it all heated up again. Honestly, nothing really interesting happens other than the odd "oh, hm" moment in the middle-latter bit and that was kinda disappointing. Overall its about an 8/10.

Gunheads is a very good book, the beginning can be a bit of a slog but when it warms up and starts doing what it does best, which is combat and battles, I can't put it down. Overall I'd give it about a 7.5~8/10.

Cadian Blood, like all ADB writes is a great page turner but has a few flaws and clichés here and there, but otherwise is a solid read and great at building tension. About a 7/10.

Deathwatch's Space Marine bits have been somewhere in the boundary between iffy and interesting in the first half, actually I found I was turning pages to continue reading about the Inquisition Agents.

The only thing that has really bothered me: (spoiler'd for obvious reasons)

Spoiler:
For fraks sake Steve Parker why did you kill both of the Inquisition Agents off, the shapeshifter died with so little dignity and so easily, completely failing to protect the boy that was part of his previous cover. It was just depressing and a cheap way to remind me that this is 40k where everything is grim-dark. Also, the gut wrenching implication that the female Ordo Xenos Interrogator was going to be used as a surrogate host to birth Genestealers/hybrids.

I've been wanting to get excited about the HH series again but I found Fear to Tread just plain awful. Angel Exterminus was good but then I got to the end and realized most of the characters where strait from McNeil's other Iron Warrior books and suddenly all these new characters I had grown to like and was interested in finding out what happens too where just in the way because they need to live for his other series. I listened to the audiobook for betrayer but haven't bothered picking it up.

I picked up Guants Ghosts a couple of weeks back though and I'm enjoying a lengthy reread of that. There are some great books in there.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

I see you haven't read Battle for the Abyss then. By the by, the new Lysander books and Wrath of Iron, also pretty bad. I regret wasting time on them.

I just read the trio of linked White Scars, Iron Hands, and Salamanders novellas. I found them interesting, though not amazing.
