ive been tempted by descent for a long time now and now i just saw the myth kickstarter.
i was wondering if anyone has any comparison between the two? should i wait for myth or is descent a great game?

everything ive read points to descent as being a great game. can anyone agree/disagree, add personal experience?

im an old warhammer quest player and like super dungeon explore so either of these (descent/myth) seem like a safe bet but im just wondering if i should wait and what the differences are.

Descent is really fun.

None of us have played Myth because the KS hasn't shipped yet.

The rules for both are very different as Deacent requires an overlord player whilst myth is completely automated.

Oh. Well I guess I did play it at GenCon. Like I said, I think the two are different enough to warrant both.

One is players vs the game. Other is player(s) vs another player.

There are two video reviews in the Myth thread, I believe.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

Descent is really good. Myth looks to be really good. It's co-op with a GM vs co-op vs the AI.

thank you guys.
the AI aspect of myth sounds interesting. i need to try to find a video that explains it a bit.
i read a few things and watched a few things but missed how the AI works.

i think ill revisit a review by a guy named undead viking. he had a good review but man was it long, over an hour. i was bouncing around through it so im sure thats why i missed the AI explanation.

I have put in many plays of MYTH over the past few weeks, and ran many demos and sessions over the weekend at a convention. Unfortunately; I have only watched others play Descent, so I can't give you a good comparison.

Both of the online reviews that are out there say that MYTH scratches a slightly different itch.

I like the full co-op aspect, and also the massive amount of stuff that you handle. Each of the characters has cool ways to kill many little guys at once,.... and can also deal heavy single target damage. You can look totally outnumbered and destined to be overwhelmed,..... but you can mow through dozens of minions as a party in true Gauntlet style!

Also pointed out by the reviewers,.... MYTH is much more focused on playing as a team,.... you have to develop the needed synergies not only within your own deck, but also with your teammates.

I've played the DnD boardgames; and they seem a bit simple in comparison,.... MYTH is very tactical,... the order in which you decide to do things is very important, and you will have lots of table talk with your friends on exactly which square to move to ,.... or to target,... which monster needs to be taken out so that the next hero can use a cool teleport or other skill to reach,....

I'll have to let others talk more about Descent,... but I've never heard a bad thing about it,.... sounds like the two don't actually have that much in common (as far as how the actual game play mechanics work).

thanks yamato.
how does the AI work... cant yo ujust manipulate what the enemies do in a way that will make it easier for you to win?

There are strict mechanics to how the monsters activate. The Darkness deck tells you what happens and in what order.

Each of the monster types have rules about how they move and which targets they will go for. Each has its own priority list for checking which hero they will attempt to attack. Some choose the closest first,.. Some go for the player with the most threat (like aggro in an MMO),... And so forth and so on. (The four expansion enemy types have unique targeting priorities as well)

The frequency with which the monsters activate is based on how you play,... What actions you choose to take as a group,.... The more you try to do,... The faster the monsters will respond.

So, while the rules for how they activate and what they do are quite rigidly spelled out,... You do have the ability to make some choices to delay that (or force it to happen faster - which can actually be good sometimes),.. But this is not a game breaker,.... It is part of trying to play the game well.

Descent is an adversarial game of GM vs. party. MYTH is a coop game, where the players play against the AI and mechanics of the game.

Descent is a dice-driven and simple resource-driven game. The players have character sheets and item cards which tell them how many dice they can throw to attempt to damage a monster. The GM has a hand of cards he pays resource tokens to bring into play.

MYTH is principally a hand-management and negative resource-driven game. Each player has a deck of cards, and the actions he can take are dictated by the cards. However, the players want to maximize the effectiveness of the cards and non-card actions, which, when played and performed, increase the negative resources which accumulate and trigger negative events.
