Well I was thinking about this the other day. My friend thinks that about 4000 points is the perfect amount for a completed army because you get a little bit of everything.
I personally think 3000 would be a solid army but that is because 2000 points is the most played in my area. That gives me 1000 points extra to play with so I have lots of units to choose from.
What do you think is the end amount for your armies before you decide that is enough for now? For other you can just in the comments how many points you think.

4,000 That way you have enough to play the grand battles at 3,000 and still have some room to work with.

2500 is what is played here . There was a time that people played 2250 too, but it doesn't happen anymore.

I think 1500 is a pretty good size. Especially for newer players. For regular gamers I'd say 2500 is a good list!

I always simply write my ideal army without any consideration to how many points it'll end up being... I typically have an idea of roughly what I want for my given theme/backstory and work it out with my preferred magic item/gifts/powers set-ups & characters and don't give a fart about totals.
My current DoC project for example, I know that in the end, my ideal 'finish' is going to be:
1) Large mono-Tzeentch including some counts as to represent a few older Storm of Chaos units.
2) A smaller Slaanesh contingent, but still including a Prince + Kipper and cool things like a Herald riding an Exalted Seeker Chariot.
3) A small Khorne force of Prince, a couple Heralds (including one on Throne), 32 'Letters, 8 'Crushers, 16 Hounds & Khannon.
All told I think it'll end up being around 6k or so worth of daemonic goodies! (mainly because a LoC, Kipper & 3 Princes really adds up!)

Depends what you mean by "finished".
An army built to a single list of 3000, or even around 2500 points, could be argued to be finished, since you can full sized games with it. That said, you get no variety in what you can field.
I started VC not long ago, and have built the army to be able to field two separate 2400 lists, which, while sharing some common units (same Core structure, same Terrorgeist etc), are completely different in focus. If I fielded everything together, I'd have a 4000 point force, and not a bad one either. So "4000" got my vote.

I went with 3000 since you'll mostly play the 2000-2500 games but you can go big for the Grand Army if you wanted. I also like to have my "Grand Army" games be my entire army (baring extra characters which I usually have too many to fit in a single army).

Its not finished until you have every model you want for the army, a point level for this is redundant

It's never over, because GW will release a new book, introduce new units, and because you don't have any of them yet you'll have to buy them. Also model aesthetics change over time and so you have to update your line, but you can never get rid of your old models, because your blood sweat and tears have gone into the assembly and painting of said models. They also stand as a mile marker of what you were capable of then as opposed to now.
I have over 10,000 points in warriors of chaos and I don't see an end in the foreseeable future, I'll keep growing the collection until I have two of every unit I'd ever want to field, then I'll get a third.
I also enjoy being able to field whatever I want in any combination I feel like, it keeps the other players in my meta constantly guessing, as no one knows if I'm going to go warrior, chariot, or troll core, (eventually marauder horse core) will I bring hellcannons or skullcrushers? Knights or dragon ogres or chimeras? Daemon prince or chaos lord or sorcerer lord? I like having choice, hence why my collection will never stop growing.

I like these answers I knew people would say there is no end mostly haha.
I still think that once I hit 2000+ that is when I start looking at another army (1500 for 40k) but once it hits 3000 I would probably add things to it slowly but not stop altogether but still consider it a complete army but not finished I guess haha.

I'm this kind of player, I have only a few armies per system, but I love them dearly and always have a large collection for each one, so I can cherrypick what I feel like fielding today instead of being restricted to one build
That said, I'm in the process of cheating by creating 4 armies in one (Bretonnia, Empire, "Tall" Dorfs, Mercenaries) using historical miniatures

Most of the tournies around here are 2,500, and thus most of the pickup games I play are ALSO 2,500. As a result the armies I play are "complete" when I have a list I'm happy with at 2,500 points.
However, if I grow bored of the list I'll start looking for ways to change things up, which will likely require that I buy more models. The grand total I can build doesn't even really factor in.

I would say around 4000 pts as it lets you play grand battles and be able to change things up.
That being said, things will normally get added each time the 'completed' army gets a new army book.

I would definitely say that you just add models until you have what you want to run (or the combinations therein). This is infinite if GW keeps releasing new and cool models.

I think it really depends on the army. I have got 2.4k list for beastmen to the dot and apart from a few odds and ends from the battalions, i don't intend to buy more. Maybe because while i enjoy playing them they are a secondary army to me? or maybe because i find them difficult to be competitive with them so i feel any new models would be for painting sake?
Although my bret army is larger and basicaly a compilation of models i wanted coupled with general expansion, i CAN'T buy new models for them atm. So they are untill further notice Finnished.

I think it depends on games vs. models/painting. I think low point games are cool. Because when you get high point games, everyone has everything in an army. At 3000pts Ogre armies (for instance) start to resemble each other. At 1500 points you will see huge variety. Because you have to take full units and the min. required in the unit. That's not really your question, I guess. But still.
