I need a Chaos (Slaanesh) Rhino, but I'm not sure if I should go for the CSM Rhino kit or just modify an old SM Rhino I already have.

Is the CSM Rhino kit just a regular SM Rhino with a Chaos upgrade sprue? If so, is the upgrade sprue worth it, or am I better off ebaying bits?

It's just the Rhino Kit with the CSM vehicle upgrade sprue. Lots of skulls and spikes as well as a chaos gunner with Combi-Bolter, and a Havoc Launcher.

What do you plan on doing with it to make it Slaaneshi?

Its just the regular rhino with the vehicle upgrade sprue. You could probably ebay some bits if you want, or the entire chaos vehicle sprues are still sold seperately on the GW website. Alternatively, there are third party places that produce some vehicle accessories that would work pretty well.

How Legion specific are those icons? I plan on doing my own fallen renegade chapter - would it look weird (to someone familiar with the fluff) to use for instance Word Bearers or Iron Warriors doors?

Legion specific doors would look a little odd, however there is a chaos undivided door set. Or you could simply make your own by cutting parts up and mounting them on the doors.

Hmm, I can only find Undivided doors for the Land Raider...

The chaos vehicle upgrade sprue has door icons you attach yourself to the basic doors featuring symbols for all 4 chaos gods, and I believe some general Star of Chaos icons as well.

As for how to make it Slaanesh, that's kind of up to your vision of him/her/it! I do think it's worth throwing a dirge caster on it if just for looks.

It makes a good job of turning a normal rhino into a hedgehog. Lots of spikes. I used some of them but mainly used the upgrade bits from forgeworld.
