You buy the unit. You buy the corresponding Imperial Armour book from forgeworld, You add them to your list. Then you deploy.
All FW = 40k = FW. You might get flak if you're using PDF experimental/test rules that a few units have, but thats about it.

As long as you keep away from experimental rules and Apoc units you are fine.

Even so:
Tell your opponent when your fielding Forgeworld units as many people have a distrust of them and will feel cheated if it is suddenly forced onto them.

Yeah I recommend a chat with your opponent before hand. Also recommend having a spare print out for them.

Wrecker, You will need to mix and match as ForgeWorld is a 'unit here, a model there' addition to the game. To my knowledge, and I could be wrong because I don't think I even have a ForgeWorld book in my library, they have not produced a book dedicated to a single faction. Instead they release books which contain rules for several factions, similar to what you will see in the Escalations RuleBook, highlighting all the new stuff they intend to add to the game at that point in time. This does create a few problems as you might need one book for unit X and another for unit Y depending on which book as the most recent release of the rules within it, but ForgeWorld does have some very interesting concepts and they are often far better priced then standard 40k. I do have to ask though: Does anyone else get the feeling that ForgeWorld, and even Game Workshop with that Escalation book, absolutely adore making Units for the Imperial Guard? Seriously, they have a list of new things as long as my arm while other factions are lucky to get a single model thrown their way.

FW= GW
There are many rules for FW models in citadel codexes. Other rules you can find in all Imperial Armour books with staps " 40k approved".

Imperial Armour: Apocalypse (the one released in 2013) would be your best bet. Watch out, as this is not the same book GW released in 2013 as well (the one with Apocalypse rules)

The guys involved with Forgeworld in the beginning (not so sure about now) were fairly big treadheads, if I remember correctly. So Forgeworld pretty much started out with large-scale collectible statues and Guard tanks and tank variants, as a lot of Forgeworld's range has come from sculptors just working on what they liked...

They still ARE treadheads, in the main. Oh, and they love Pipes, and think there should be more pipes on models (see the dwarf command unit... )
Jinx - chaos actually havea number of army lists dedicated to them, as part of the siege of vraks ( IA5 - 7) books. These books are sadly way out of date, however there are back of the book rules contained for those characters in, from memory, IA:Apocalypse (reaver titan cover, the current one)
If you have ANY doubts give them a ring - they are massively helpful over the phone!

Nosferatu1001,
It is amazing that, ForgeWorld and Game Workshop are so closely related but their customer service is so different.

Eh, certainly in the UK GW customer service is fine - replacing boxes instore, or sorting them out over the phone, is not usually an issue.
FW just have the ability / need to go that extra step. They mispacked a revenant I bought for my husband about 3 years ago, giving two right arms. NExt day special delivery (g'teed, expensive delivery) box turned up with the replacement bits. Had 2 of the first run of machrius vulcans, and one hull was shockingly mismolded - they bumped someone elses order (sorry...) and got me a replacment next day. Also only one they asked for the mis mold back to, and I quote "bash it over the QA guys head so he learns not to send it out next time"
YMMV of course, as I have no overseas experience with CS

As for Treadheads,
Well... I can't really blame them for the love of tanks, I was almost an Imperial Guard's men myself. They seemed like one of the few factions that where doing futuristic war in a way that seemed most appropriate to futuristic war: Meat for the grinder and really big guns to get the job done. While there was a few mentally challenged personal, such as commissioners that want to hit things with swords, Imperial Guard at least had the tank to fit their needs.
Then I saw the hammerhead and that... gun.... *Blushes*

Its great to talk to them (FW open days, games days) as their passion is just enthusiastic.
I understand what you mean about guns. First FW models were sexier broadsides, and a tigershark AX-1-0. Would make anyone blush, the size of that thing....

It's pretty much official Games Workshop stance that the Imperium will "win out in the end" because they're human, and we're human, and so we want what actually exists in the real world to win out. Is why everything pretty much is told from the Imperium's perspective.

They might not be as 'pants staining scary' as RipTides, but if Broadsides where Elites I would be so happy. It wouldn't be a list I would field without discussing it with an opponent, my opponents enjoying the game is important and a list with 3 full Broadside teams and 3 Hammerheads might upset a few people, but it would definitely be something I would consider building. Oh goddess, the thought of some Special Character or Rule making Broadside's Troop choices and a list consisting of nothing but broadsides and Hammerheads! Oh, and a lone little ethereal to fill the mandatory HQ slot, it might be able to give feel no pain or something useful. Railguns everywhere... squeeeeee! Wow, I am in a mood this morning.
