Ok, I'm thinking about adding an allied unit to my necron forces in the future. The thing I have noticed is that they are weak on assault. Point for point and not counting Nids, what is the best assault unit in the game?

Point for point the best pure assault units are probably Ork Slugga Boyz. 6pts per model with 4 attacks on the charge. Shoota Boyz are generally considered better though because they can actually do some damage during the shooting phase in exchange for losing 1 CC attack.

The point efficiency of Boyz is one of the main reasons that Orks can still be somewhat competitive despite having a 4th edition codex.

You've already got access to Wraiths, one of the best melee units in the game (certainly far better than mobs of Boyz).

Nids have no melee unit that can match Wraiths in points efficiency anyway.

Wraiths joined by a destroyer lord are one of the best melee units in the game .

6 Wraiths with a couple of Whip Coils is 230 points which is about the same as 30 Shoota Boyz w/ 2 Big Shootas and a BP PK Nob. Potentially, that's 18 CC attacks from Wraiths vs.63 Shooting and 63 CC from the Orks. Or you could take Slugga boyz and get 120 attacks on the charge that are hitting & wounding wraiths on a 4+. So I wouldn't really call Wraiths 'Far Better' than mobs of boyz, especially when we're talking about point efficiency.

I agree that it's probably not worth the effort to take an allied attachment when you can just field Wraiths but I have to defend my lowly Orks

You also have to pay for the HQ, and you've got to actually get into combat in order to fight there. Wraiths are orders of magnitudes better than Ork Boyz for that reason. It's not that Boyz are bad, it's that Wraiths are much better. Yes, the Boyz would probably kill the Wraiths in CC, but they'll never catch them in the first place. Mobility is huge.

this came up when I saw how my wraiths (currently only 3 of them) faired against a unit of my daughter's termagaunts. Even after I had wittled down the gaunts there were still 22 of them in the unit to surround my wraiths (who were attacking a different unit of hers). The poor wraiths didn't stand a chance (especially since special rules like the whip coil initiative rule were not in affect, just "move", "shoot", "assault" game since she is brand new and only 10)

Plus, once you actually get to combat, getting all 30 boys into engagement range is really hard. Not to mention, the boyz are great against non-assault units, but only mediocre against most assault units, since those assault units will go first and possibly even kill enough that the boyz will not be able to make the engagement on their initiative.
