Hey folks, I have decided to maybe go back into my archives for the plan i had on tyranids, and actually start them up, but all I would really start off with, would be the codex, (unless i find the free pdf version), and the new swarm set, that replaced the battleforce. and maybe still purchase the battleforce cuz I nkow a place that still probably has one, then just make my army out of that? Or...... is there a sort of cool budget list i could make with genestealers, etc?

Also, how many points would the new swarm set for the tyranids total out to be?

I think you posted this in the wrong forum. But I will answer anyway before the mods move it.

The swarm is a great start to any tyranid list. For one, it actually saves you some money, which is very unusual for GW. The swarm gives you 80 little guys (which can be made into 40 terms and 40 horms or 80 terms using extra weapons) which are vital for basically every nid list. The gargoyles are nice for screening and their blinding attack is really helpful, though you'll probably need 15 or 20 for an effective unit. The carnifex has become popular again with the points drop in the new codex, thanks to dakkafexs and wound-allocation shenanigans. The only thing you probably will never use are the rippers, and you only get those because you get rippers on the spruces of the other kits. It is a great build. I can't tell you how many points it would be exactly, but together (not including the rippers) it would run about 600 points before any upgrades. 2 of these plus a tyrant or 2 would make for a great swarm list.

As for the genestealers, they are still pretty tough to use in this edition. People tend to use them as infiltrating MSU with broodlords to use their psych powers and take out lone tanks. It's a difficult list that uses only stealers for troops, but it is possible. If you are set on that, I would try searching this forum for some list ideas.

Also, check out the swap shop for some good deals on nids. A lot of people who were waiting for the new codex to be like the Tau or Eldar codex are getting rid of their armies. You can get a great deal. Plus if you go the genestealer route, I'm getting rid of about 60 genestealers myself.

I don't recommend pirating the codex...

If you get the Swarm box...Add in a Hive Tyrant, a box or two of Warriors ( can build a Prime, or two from this, if wanted) (two Primes make the hive tyrant optional, I would Not reccomend this...one is "OK") And some Big Ugly Monsters....MC's really are a big part of a "good" Nid list...

If you buy Two Tyrgons you can go with a "Endless Tunnel Assault" list I've posted here abouts... Tyranofex is a very good anchor for an army, extra spicey for low point games...

I'd just buy a box of Gargoyles to boost the ones that come in the box, they really are exelant Fast attackers...

Synapse is an issue for Nids in general, and is an extra big deal for "swarmey" armies, so you'll need several sources. Warriors can help, and while not as good as the "olden days" Tervigon can still have a place on a respectable list. (though likely only one...) Personally I like Zoanthropes a lot for this role, and they supply needed anti-tank/anti-power armor ability to an infantry centric force.

So I'd suggest a Swarm box, and HQ (Tyrant) and a warriors box, plus a Gargoyles box. After thats all painted you can play a game or two and buy some monsters that suit your style of play. (Just proxy to get a feel, before you spend big chunks of cash...)

I think you can buy a Tyranofex/Tervigon right off because you'll find use for it ,with either build, in most any list you come up with.....

Why?

Extra money for models! Why reward GW for poor work !?

Because dakka does not support or encourage stealing. If the OP chooses to go find an alternative way to obtain the codex, as many people do, then that is fine. But don't talk about it here, as the mods won't like that.

I agree, I am NOT trying to suggest that I am stealing anything, I was just curious if there was possibly a free pdf version somewhere that I could obtain WITHOUT having to make deals with people I dont know online, and I am not actually for sure I'm going to really start tyranids yet since I havent made my final decision. So, Im NOT stealing or torrenting anything.

And yes, its true that it would let me keep my money in my wallet, for more models, but I dont want to get major viruses, etc on my, or anyone else's computer.

Imo the swarm box is GW's way of trying to get rid of the weak stuff that gather dust on the shelves. There are better deals with Termagants and Carnifex, which is the only good things in the deal. Gargoles are decent at best.

I'd build a list first and then order the models from Wayland Games.

Yeah, Wayland games looks very well priced, and affordable, especially for me, since I am pretty much on a budget for now, and don't really want to spend much money on it at the moment

it seems Nid players are starting to better understand the codex. New builds are emerginf. Further the dataslates are providing what seems to be some really helpful formations.

i especially like the sounds of 'endless swarm' and 'living artillery node'.

I have a love /hate relationship with anything green.
