Im just about to build my first group of zombies for my VC. Very excited! My question being, as I don't have the codex/army book, when putting them together do you have to run all spears/big weapons? Or can you mix in some small hand weapons and such? Doing that will it affect their combat rules and such for spears when I eventually start to play? Also I see it comes with about 5 or so tomb stones! Can they be used as zombies as well? Have more like 25 in the box that way haha! Any help would be awesome, thanks dakka!!!

All those weapons in the box count as hand weapons and not as anything special. Yes you can use the tombstones for extra guys, I like to use them on 40mm bases along with an zombie model to represent 4 guys for the models invove

Also if you can get hold of extra bases you can use stuff like legless zombies and such to make even more zombies out of a single box

There is only 1 unit in the game that can mix and match what wargear they take(maneaters). Everyone else has to have the same equipment for the whole unit.
Zombies don't have any special wargear, just a hand weapon IIRC. Any thing the models may be armed with just represents the decrepit and hodgepodge nature of the zombies.

Try a few 40x40 mm bases with maybe 2 zombies and a gravestone, or make a few regular 20x20 with just the torso of the zombie and a hand (rising up thru the grave). The larger bases are good filler and will help when they inevitably get cut down in droves. I have 4 40x40mm bases for just this, and 2 five long, 1 rank, for just this. I also suggest magentizing, as you will curse the volume of models during setup, packup, and movement. Once used magentics for the models to the trays, it was soooo much easier to manage. I also store them by the 2 block (4 ranks of 5) and several 5x2 and 5x1. I see some people use the huge horde trays for the horde, or as a loooong bus, and if you get whittled down, you will also hate the tray getting in the way. If you use several smaller trays, its easier for the later rounds of close combat. Enjoy!!

I built most of my zombies with no weapons at all. They just seem to look better that way.
