So, I have the Open Fire boxset which gives me a good start for an infantry company ... so I have

1 Infantry Company HQ
2 Grenadier Platoons
2 Pak40s
3 StuGs

Yesterday I purchased a Panzer IV H box, so that gives me 5 PnzrIV and I also purchased a 3rd platoon because for some reason I though the OF set only had 1 platoon.

So using the 17t. SS-Panzergrenadierkompanie PDF from BF, all that together makes a 1505 pt force. I think that's a pretty good starting force.

I think I'd like to get a mechanized force, so I'm thinking 2 boxes of 251/1s from PSC gives me 10 which is enough for 2 platoons and the HQ, 3 boxes gives me 3 platoons of mech. I could also return the unopened platoon and get something else at my FLGS, like arty or recon.

I chose German because I wanted something I could play in all three eras of the war, and so far everything I have is listed as Mid/Late war

Opinions?

If you're going for arty a cheap and apparently effective route is the 15cm Nebelwerfer. They'll provide you with the ability to lay down smoke and also help to take out dug in infantry.

For recon a lot of people seem to swear by 8rads. I do not no why, but they do. Personally I love the PnzII Luchs, partly because it looks nice, but also because it can be used in more theaters than just late war.

If you want an army that you can play in all 3 eras with only limited changes then Finnish infantry is your best bet, All you really need to change are your command teams and any AT guns that you may have.

First off this is an extremely useful resource http://easyarmy.com/ its an army builder that allows you to effectively buy FoW source books for about £2 each (legally).

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

Panzer IV's are great, but you kinda need to beef out the infantry portion of your army. To me that means Nebs, Mortars, and HMG's.

Thanks for all the words guys.

I have been using army builder, I've been building a Vassal mod with features remarkably similar to that of FoW for a buddy and I to play long distance, and we use Army Builder to create armies. Finally found players nearby and wanted to build a physical force.

I think I may take back the 3 platoon I purchased on accident and look at either mortars/HMG or the Nebs. All are usable in the 17. SS-Panzergrenadierkompanie Intel briefing I've been using

Changed up the thread title...

So, after the above and painting things up, here's where my German force stands. This is a C/V Panzergrenadier force from Grey Wolf

Cmd w/ Panzerfausts
AT team

3 Squad Platoon
Cmd w/ panzerfaust
251/10

3 squad platoon
Cmd w/ panzerfaust
251/10

3 StuG IIIG

5 Pnzr IV ausf H

2 PaK40

3 15cm Nebelwerfer

1530 pts

My goal is to have an equivalent allied army and try to use as many aspects of te game as possible. I'm going to use the Sherman Vs from Open Fire as M4s until I can get suitable replacements. Big hull differences between the A4 and A1 but still going with it. I know I want some M4A3E8s as that's what my grandfather was in during the Korean conflict. So here's what I have so far as an idea for an Allie force. This is a 4th AD force from Blood, Guts, and Glory:

Cmd 2x M4A3E8

3x M4 w/ 1x M4A3E8

3x M4 w/ 1x M4A3E8

1x Parachute Platoon

3x M7 Priest Battery

1530 pts

So no aircraft and no recon. I think if I go to the 7th AD (so C/V to C/T) I could go to 3 platoons of 2 M4 and 1 E8 and add some recon plus that would use the whole E8 box instead of leaving 1 out like in the army above.

Thoughts?
