I know that some of the characters have the tyrant feature but I don't know what it is in either fluff or crunch.

Tyrants are the 'gods' of the Malifaux world. They have been hinted at in the fluff, with several of the main characters gaining the power of some of the Tyrants when the Red Cage fell in Book 3 back in 1st edition.

If I remember correctly, they were basically powerful beings that were sealed away years and years and years ago (don't remember by whom, or why). There was something about the Hungering Darkness's fluff in Book 4 about him being a Tyrant a long time ago, but instead of being sealed away, he simply lurked in the darkness and lost a good chunk of his power and tyrant status, but he was one.

The Tyrants were lord and masters of malifaux pre-human times, and were only banished to spirit forms by the Neverborn.

Now that the Humans have breached Malifaux, the chains holding the Tyrants at bay have been loosened, and they are returning, taking humans as host vessels (Sonnia, Rasputina & Hamelin to pick the more obvious ones)
