Or do they not care and do their own thing, and ally when necessary?

Probably varies by craftworld and kabal. Although the nicest I know of regarding a canon incident for the Dark Elder is when they teamed up with Lyanden to save it from some demons, only to tell Lyanden they did it because they found Lyanden's situation of being forced to use the dead to be hilarious.

That type of trolling is still MUCH nicer than the Dark Eldar have ever been to any other race in the fluff, though, as far as I know.

The Eldar see the Dark Eldar as their black-sheep cousins... but still superior to every other example of life in the galaxy, because at least they are Eldar.

The Dark Eldar see their stuffy cousins as, well, stuffy cousins. Boring and rigid and not-at-all-fun at parties... but, still, they are Eldar, and better than those apes from down the block.

Eldar do frequently pass between both societies.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

There is more then just the Iyanden event, they have allied a fair few times in the fluff. They teamed up with each other and Harlequins to eject CSM's from the webway, they joined together to fight some humans (CWE cut of supply lines then left the undefended planet to their 'allies'), DE CWE and Corsairs all live in peace in a webway port (Not Commaragh), Dark Eldar help Eldar Corsairs to gether soulstones which they then sell to CWE (showing that they trade), any CWE can become a DE and some DE eve become CWE in the Path series, DE Kabal is at war with Ulthwe but call the war off due to the waste of Eldar lives (showing they care for ALL eldar lives) and finally the Harlequins act as emissaries and peace keepers between the two cousins. That, is more then enough to justify their battle brothers claim.

This is a pretty complicated topic.

Most people assume Craftworld Eldar are the "standard" flavor and Dark Eldar are Eldar with an evil twist, sort of like how a Chaos Space Marine is Space Marine plus Chaos. But actually, the Dark Eldar are the remnants of mainstream Eldar culture. The Craftworlders were the prudish fanatical weirdos who rejected normal Eldar society; just keep in mind that "normal" means hugely depraved by human standards. Commorragh is basically just a continuation of what the Crone Worlds (the Eldar homeworlds) were like when the Craftworlders started to leave.

Well, the Craftworlders have not mellowed out in the meantime. They are still super uptight by "normal" Eldar (that is, Dark Eldar) standards. I don't think that they "hate" Dark Eldar. That probably oversimplifies it to the point of being meaningless. But they clearly reject the Dark Eldar way of life for moral reasons. As for the Dark Eldar: if anything, they have only gotten more decadent since the Craftworlders left considering what they have to do (actually, what they choose to do) to elude Slaanesh. Again, I think "hate" is too simple a word for what they feel toward Craftworlders.

Maybe imagine what an Amish person thinks about how you live and think about your opinions about an Amish person. It's not an exact comparison but it might give you a sense for how much more complicated it is.

One interesting point is that Dark Eldar seem to refuse the use of spirit stones. Now that could be explained in a number of ways but it's a good example of an extremely fundamental difference between the two cultures. So while they may interact (peacefully) on a relatively common if warmthless basis -- especially Eldar renegades -- there do seem to be some major divergences.

You pretty much already started this thread.

Eldar, dark or otherwise, are still elves. And if elves are anything, it's racist. If they're any two things, it's snotty and racist.

Even though they consider each other mortal enemies, they'd prefer to fight back-to-back with other elves they hate rather than let some wall-eyed, drooling, apes-in-pants kill an elf and get away with it. And they're Battle Brothers rather than Allies of Convenience because each side knows the other side's racism runs just as deep.

They DO hate one another. They just hate everyone else SO much more...
