Guard Heavy Weapon Crewman

I've recently returned to Warhammer after a roughly 8 year hiatus but unfortunately most of my old armies were sold whilst I was at university. Now I have graduated and am earning enough to fuel my plastic crack addiction I have decided to return to game. I've recently started to rebuild my Imperial Guard but this time with a WW1 theme, shameless plug time: The Fraying Paintbrush IG Gallery.

I'm looking to play a fluffy army which is still competitive. It will most likely involve a lot of Infantry, Heavy Wep teams and Artillery. I will include Tanks but I would like to limit their use.

I am currently working on a Grenadier squad (stormtroopers) and am not sure what weapons to equip them with. I was thinking of making them tank hunters but I will most likely kit out some Sappers (Veterens with demolitions) for this task. So what I am asking is, in regards to how I plan to build my army, what role do you feel that Stormtroopers are best suited for?

Meltadrop. They're one of the best units for this role.

4 stormtroopers [2 meltas]
1 sarge [plazma pistol, hot-shot lazpistol]

112 pts total

I've used this unit with good results. Reroll to deepstrike makes them rather reliable. Besides, ig has easy access to reserves controle.

May also consider plazma/flamerdrop. But i prefer them being tankhunters. And don't forget - they can throw krak nades. Extra s6 shot is alwayz handy. I take plazmapistol not for it's effectiveness, though, it's a rare case where plazma pistol is worth it's points, but to make a sarge look awesome with 2 pistols!

They're versatile enough to fill whatever role the rest of your list is lacking in. A full squad is decent against Marines, good against other heavy infantry (not great against marines, mind. They're more expensive per man than tac squads too, so pick on expensive MEQs like Devastators, Vanguard, etc.)

They're most commonly deployed as Meltacide units, though they also make good special weapon delivery boys in MSU squads. I like to run Melta personally.

The downsides are that they're expensive, and not too durable over normal guardsmen. Their prime advantage is as a (fairly) accurate delivery system for special weapons.

Hmmm, Stormtroopers as Meltacide squads do sound interesting, attaching an astropath to the CCS would make it much easier to get them when I most need them as well.

As an alternative to using the Veterans as tank hunters I was thinking of attaching Sergeant Harker to a vet squad, load them up with plasma guns and demo charges and just have them shoot from cover whilst holding objectives. How does that sound?

Should work out fine. I doubt the demo charges will be needed if you're sitting on a home point though.

I also agree with meltacide. You can outflank as well as deep strike(astropath helps here). 2 melta guns, then maybe a sarge with a plasma pistol(always take dual pistols on your IG sarges, as you get +1 attack and can shoot both. Plus, models with two pistols look totally badass).

Also remember to throw a krak grenade if your in range. Since your hunting tanks, those hot shot lasguns are worthless, but the krak grenade can at least do something to AV12 or less.

melticide is good always.

For an infantry-heavy force, I'd also add that when you take a full 30 of them, they're good for opening up a second front. Overwhelming your opponent with dudes from one direction isn't as good as overwhelming them with dudes from two.

The main problem is that this is a go-big-or-go-home kind of strategy, which means, after you're done buying them and enough infantry to qualify as "infantry heavy" you probably don't have many points left over to include anything else.

It was fun, though, combined with either mass carapace vets or SitNW conscripts. Showing up with a unit with flamers and two with meltaguns meant that I could show up at a weakly-held objective and just comprehensively take it. Retaking an objective from 30 stormtroopers isn't the easiest thing in the world, turns out.
