Hey everyone,
I am beginning a new Salamander Drop army list and am wondering what is the best points value to aim towards? Should I start small and grow over time, or just head straight to 2000+ points? Thanks for any advice!

Honestly when I first started 40k, I bought the space wolves battleforce, logan grimnar, and a thunderwolf cavalry box. I wish I would've started smaller and not spent so much on stuff I didn't want to use. I'm currently re-getting back into it after a break and the wife and I are going to be playing kill team. I will be starting over as Imperial Guard since our babies wrecked my space wolves and my codex seems to have disappeared.
tldr: start small, learn everything about the units you want to use that way you dont burn money I stuff you'll regret later. Also keep expensive toy soldiers away from babies.

600 points is a really nice size to play at.

I'd say 500. I'm not overly familiar with Kill Team rules but it's cheap enough to get 500 points and the Force Org chart is different I believe.

Kill Team is 200 points, and it's a totally different kind of game. 0 HQ, 0-1 Elites, 0-2 Troops, 0-1 Fast Attack, 0 Heavy Support.
500 points limits some armies more than others. 600 lets you take at least one fun unit no matter which army you bring, while some armies like Marines or GK struggle to bring more than the minimum required 1 HQ and 2 Troops at 500.

I prefer anywhere between 500-1000, but I must express that I love, LOVE me some Kill Team. In my local gaming club, 1500+ gets a little messy.

Unless you seriously like painting, I wouldn't go straight to 2000pts...

Start with a kill team to get a feel for how a force handles. Move up to a 400 point 40k in 40 minutes army, then aim for the 1k mark as you grow more comfortable with both your ability to paint your colour scheme and how your army plays.

Alright so the majority votes between 500-1000 points. Sounds awesome! Are there more common points levels between those two that people play most often?

Depends on where you play I suspect. I often see/hear about 500pts, 750pts and 1000pts games in my area but from what I've seen on dakka 600pts and 800pts are also popular elsewhere.
However if you're just starting an army and want to get a game in I'm sure most opponents are willing to write a list to whatever points limit you can go to.
