500 pts is so low I don't think you're going to worry about facing anything cannon-able. A hellblaster might do you better. And demigryphs certainly would.

I'd say xbows or handguns > archers.

If you wanted to be a punk, if just got knights for core and demigrpyphs for special, a warrior priest or captain on a warhorse with some magic, you'd stomp all over people cuz like everything you have is going to be like armor save 2+.

You can't buy a battalion going that way, but I don't think buying generic empire core is worth it at low points. They only become valuable if you can get buff machines around them and you don't have the points. So they're just kinda sucky elves or something. So get stuff that other armies don't have.

List one is the better of the two.

I would drop handguns for more swordsmen, and drop cannons for another 20 halberds.

A huge problem is that the two armies that I face are Vampire Counts, who likes to use grave guard with the killing blow, and I also play against skaven who use poison wing mortars. Both of those would negate the advantage I had over my army if I ran a list of Knights, Demis, and a Warrior Priest.

With both of your advice put together, I made this.
497 points
Warrior Priest - 97
Gamblers Armor
Sheild

20 Halberdiers 130
standard

20 Swordsmen 150
standard

Hellblaster Volley Gun 120

KB does nothing to demi. But you can get into combat a lot faster with fast units. Poison mortars and KB will hurt all your core troops. There's nothing you can do about that. A WP can add a ward save (for cc), however. If you're hit by the template, only 1 guy is going to get hit with the 4+ save the rest are going to get hit with 5+ and because they are big models, it's likely going to be only 2. So you might lose 1 cavalry. And that mortar costs...65. So it's not cheap.

Forgot that the demies were monstrous cavalry. Hmmmmmm. So the knights and the demi are worth the lack of shooting and low model count? The poison wind mortar will almost always scatter as well... I'll just have to be more strategic with my charges but the fun is always in the challenge.

Arch Lictor 148 pts
gamblers armor
shield barding

7 Knightly order 164 pts
musician
lances/shields

3 Demigyph Knights 184
standard
lances/shields

Wow, that's just 2 units, huh?

Forget taking a Lord. He's too expensive @500. Make him a WP and go down to 5 knights. Or whatever 125pts is (25%).

Use the rest of the points in...something else. At least get 3 units.

So let's see.
WP+Horse +barding=82
I'd say give him HA + Shield= 86
So his armor save is 2+
Dawnstone reroll armor saves = 111

OR, just give him HA and a regular shield and a ward. But a 2+ rerollable AS is really good. Though won't stop KB and such. But he can give himself a ward in CC if you get off the prayer.

you save 37 pts
2 less knights you save 44 pts
81 pts

That's 13 Halbediers.

OR something like that. But definately get 3 units at least. If you can squeak up to 100, you can get a mortar, which will hurt Skaven, but won't do much to grave guard.

EDIT: you need to add either like a Preceptor to the knights or standard to get it to be 25% of your Core.

I would probably switch banners for musicians, and WP for a mage on horse, because he can change the game with a maxed fireball, or dwellers (note: a lvl1 on a horse and dragonbane gem is 82pts).

can see your point but IF scenarios are rolled for you could pretty much auto lose a game for having no standards.

agreed with this being a valid option.
