I'm reading in other threads the various combinations of Primary army lists, allies, detachments and the various data slates that can make up an army you can field on the table.

Quite frankly, I'm confused.
Can anyone tell me or point me in the direction of a chart or list that explains what I can take?

I get the Primary detachment and allied detachment from the book.

I also understand that if I'm playing 2000 points or more I can double FOC and have two primary and two allies.

After that..... uuuuuhhhhhh.......

If it helps, I play Space Marines in the flavor of Salamanders and Blood Angels. I have some Sisters, IG, Necrons and DE. I also have a Vindicaire and Culexus assassin.

Basicly stuff like inquisition don't follow a normal FOC they can take a HQ followd by a another random unit you want along with your primary + allied. so you can say it's kinda allied to your allied a third allie

Waagh like a bawz

-
Kaptin Goldteef's waagh! 16250 points 45/18/3 (W/L/D) 7th Ed

6250 points 9/3/1 (W/L/D) sixth-ed
Dark elves: 2350points 3/0/0 (W/L/D)
3400 points 19/6/0 (W/L/D) 8' armybook
Wood Elves 2600 points, 6/4/0 (W/L/D)

Every army starts with the Primary Detachment. This is the structure that has always existed, with 1-2 HQ, 2-6 Troops, 0-3 Elites/Heavy/Fast, and now has an extra 0-1 Fortification added on top.

In addition to this, you are always entitled to an Allied Detachment. This is a smaller structure than the previous, must be drawn from a different army, and has various degrees of friendliness with the Primary.

This has now been expanded with a few extra toys:

Inqusition Detachment- Does not count as an Allied Detachment, but functions in a similar way. Effectively bolt-on your Inquisitor and his friends to your army, nice and easy, no real cost to you except the points.

Formations- A self-contained force that also bolts-on to your army, no costs or restrictions beyond the points. You need to consult your Allies table to determine how friendly they are though.

At games above 2000pts you gain twice the usual number of options for all your stuff. You can therefore take 2 Primary Detachments, 2 Allied Detachments (Though from the same Codex), 2 Inquisitorial Detachments, and since you already had unlimited Formations, nothing really changes there.

There's also Knight and LotD attachments too, these work like Inquisition attachments.

Well, you could use a primary detachment, an ally detachment, a Knight detachment (1-3 Knight, non-scoring), an Inquisitorial detachment, a LotD detachment, a Lord of War detachment, and a stronghold detachment.

Something forgotten?

I'm almost positive 2x FOC only refers to your Primary detachment and doesn't allow double allies or inquisition allies and so forth.

I don't know about Inquisition, but you do get double allies provided that you take double primary (You cannot take a single primary and double allies)
Pg 109, Allied Detachments, the first sentence tells you that you can have one for each primary.

I can't find anything about forts, but there's only 1 box.

Oh, I certainly vote with my dollar, but the problem is that that is not enough. The problem with the 'vote with your dollar' response is that it doesn't take into account why we're not buying the product. I want to enjoy 40k enough to buy back in. It was my introduction to traditional games, and there was a time when I enjoyed it very much. I want to buy 40k, but Gamesworkshop is doing their very best to push me away, and simply not buying their product won't tell them that.

For the sake of clarity/absurdity if I had the points I could build the following:

Primary- Space Marines
Ally- Imperial Guard
Detachment- Inquisition
Detachment- Knight Titan
Detachment- Legion of the Damned
Detachment- Thunderhawk Gunship
Detachment- Aquila Strongpoint

But double FOC doesn't say you get 2 primary armies... you just get double the force organization slots. I.E. If I take ultramarines as a primary I get double the slots for my ultramarines. This doesn't mean I get a primary ultramarines and then another primary of a different chapter like whitescars. Look at any tournament list that has double force org and allies. I guarantee you will not see more than the standard allotment of ally slots being 1 hq, 1 elite, 2 troops, 1 FA, 1 HS

Bigger games, page 110, second paragraph;
If you're playing a game of 2,000 points or more, you can take an additional primary detachment.

If you keep reading down it even states that you may take an additional allied detachment if you've taken an additional primary.
Both primary detachments must be from the same codex. Both allied detachments much be from the same codex, but a different codex from the primary (Some rules give exceptions)

I wasn't saying you get one primary for Ultramarines and one primary for Whitescars (or anything like that)
As for tourny lists, that may be because that tournament doesn't allow double force org.
