Hey guys, I really wanna write my own backstories and fluff for armies I'm planning in the future but I feel like I should practice a bit first.
So one day I was thinking about how a Space Wolf might become a Lone Wolf as they are sole survivors of their squad.
I wrote this little short story in the hope of getting some feedback.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The young Space Wolf unleashed his Fangmaw Chainsword, the blade's engine rumbled and growled as if in hungry anticipation.
The Bloodclaw snarled at the foe before him, his keen eyes taking in every aspect of his opponent's gory visage. Heretical symbols cut jagedly, almost violently, violated every surface of the ancient power armour the Chaos Champion bore.
The champion lifted up the shredded torso of a dead Bloodclaw from his side. The legless, one armed carcass hung limply from his grip, all signs of life extinguished. He bought up his wiring chainaxe to meet the torso and a torrent of blood was splashed and sprayed across his armour, dripping down to fill the runes, as the axe bit deep into the organs of the body.
Carelessly tossing the ruined corpse aside the Chaos Champion seemed to emanate a red glow as the blood continued to fill the runes beyond their physical capacity.
The more blood the symbols drank the stronger the glow became until it shone outward enough that the Space Wolf realised the symbols themselves were the source of the light, as if the blood they absorbed was then expelled as energy.
The Space Wolf noticed something else.
The blood was no longer simply flowing down the armour but had now begun to slowly spread across its surface as though the blood was seeping into cloth.
The Bloodclaw pounced on the champion. He would permit no more heretical atrocities to be committed in his sight.
His Fangmaw Roared as it arced downward, eager to sink it's fangs into traitor skull, instead biting into the cold metal of the champion's chainaxe.
Without hesitation the Bloodclaw grabbed the unguarded tip of the fangmaw. The teeth bit deep into the middle of his hand and his middle finger was instantly shredded.
He continued to push down harder, using his weight and overhead position in an attempt to overpower the guarding Champion. Slowly the blade drew closer to the Chaos Space Marine's Helmet, sparks from the colliding blades reflected brightly in his otherwise empty, black vision lenses.
Driven by combat chems and pure adrenaline the space wolf pushed down as hard as he could with both arms. He completely ignored the pain as the Fangmore split his thumb and index finger from the other two remaining fingers and chewed its way through his hand and wrist.
His reckless efforts were rewarded as his fine hearing detected the distinct 'chink' of snapping metal and the handle of the chainaxe was split in two. The Chaos Marine's helmet offered little protection from the chainsword as it carved its way deep into his skull, violently mincing his brain into a grey paste.
The traitor's body went limp and as it slowly collapsed to the ground the space wolf dislodged his sword with a final kick to the traitor's chest.
The body landed with a dull 'thud' in the snow.
Blood now poured from the vile runes of the armour as though whatever force containing it all had either left or died along with it's wearer.
The single Lone Wolf inspected his destroyed hand and, with litle hesitation, sawed it off at the wrist.
His armour's systems immediately began to cauterised and treated the wound for him as he sat down in the snow waiting for his brothers to come for him.
taking his hunting knife he stripped the flesh from the two halves of his ruined hand and cleaned the bones in the snow.
Upon each finger bone he inscribed the names of his fallen packmates and tied a half to each side of his Fangmaw.
The wind picked up and carried off his muttering into the silence of the icy fields as he repeated the names of his fallen kin over and over to himself.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I honestly don't think it's the greatest but I had fun writing it.
Please let me know what you think!

I really liked the whole sequence with the hand and the chainsword - it really showcased the Bloodclaw's determination. The phrase 'mincing his brain into a grey paste' sticks in the memory, too.

Fun read!

What's so great about build routine 721? What about Build routine 720, or even 722??

Thanks guys I really appreciate your support. Deffinitly makes me feel more confident about writing 40k shorts in the future

I'd love to get a SW fan's opinion on this piece if possible. I'm not totally solid on SW fluff and my have gotten some things wrong so I'm hoping someone who knows better can show me the light/Illuminate any potential mistakes.

Cheers
