This is the 2nd time now Ive had people tell me that my greater Daemon cant join lesser ones. I deployed my GUO with 14 plague bearers. The codex says that GUO is a character.....so is there a rule, somewhere that I missed that says they cant?

Yes, you missed the thing that being a character isn't the same as having the Independent Character special rule, which is what allows you to join units

Basically, there are benefits to being a character, even though it isnt an independant character (so it cant join units or embark on transports)
As a character, it can issue and accept challenges, which would for example protect it from getting completely smashed by a deathstar.

Why can't characters embark on transports?

I think he means embark on transports with another unit. Being a character doesn't in and of itself affect embarking on transports, that's what the bulky, etc rules are for.

Yeah nothing specific restricting a single character from getting in a transport, but he cant be in it with anyone else and if that character is a monstrous creature he also cant ride in it.
