New York City emergency crews are responding to reports of an explosion and building collapse.
It is unknown if anyone has been hurt in the incident at 116th Street and Park Avenue on Wednesday morning.
East Harlem residents reported hearing a blast in the apartment building before it caved in, according to US media.
Aerial images of the site showed a huge pall of smoke or dust with fire crews dousing the rubble.
The local utility has been called to shut off the gas following the explosion, which damaged windows in the area, reports WABC TV.
"It was an explosion and a building collapsed," a spokesman for New York Police Department told AFP news agency.
Breaking news.

Just tuned into CNN briefly, they're saying about 11 people so far have been treated for minor injuries.
They also just mentioned that FDNY has called in a 4th alarm - they've said about 150'ish firefighters already on scene, plus the police bomb squad has also apparently been called in.
Second the hope that this turns out to be just a freak accident and not some kind of illegal activity.

According to reports, a building exploded and collapsed in East Harlem this morning. The FDNY said 33 units and 106 firefighters are en route to the building, which is at 116th and Park. Metro-North has suspended all service out of Grand Central.
UPDATE 10:33 am: The FDNY says 39 firetrucks and 168 firefighters are now at the scene. One of the two buildings is completely "gone" and the NYPD bomb squad is reportedly investigating

I doubt it was anything more than whats being claimed (although meth operation isnt entirely out of the question). East Harlem is full of old rent-controlled (read: poor) tenement buildings that aren't necessarily in the best condition. Likely there was a gas leak somewhere and the slumlord who owned it wasn't taking care of it even after tenants complained and then this happened.
