Ummm can't attached drones not shoot until they detach then they form their own unit? I could be wrong but from what I recall that is the rule but feel free to call me out on that one.

No, they can fire while attached. The drone section in the codex covers all of it.

They shoot as if passengers but have to fire their shots at the same target at the piranha.
