How can I do good looking but not overpowering frost on space marine armour, specifically Imperial fist armour.
I want it to appear that they have been stationed on a hostile frozen planet and whenever they go outside their armour and equipment frosts up.

well my mates space wolves just have some snow sprinkled on it as the texture 'mourn mountain snow' does not work on the actual models but quite frankly you may need a more experience modeller to find ideas for a frozen bolter(because i would say blue glaze+ard'coat)
good luck

Ive thought about using basing snow but I'm pretty sure it would end up just clogging the model up. I need the frost to look natural and not too overpowering.

Your best bet would be to try what is called a "winter wash" or "whitewash" effect on the model. It can be kind of tricky, but when done right, it looks awesome.
Give this a read: http://5-th-dimension.blogspot.com/2013/08/winter-white-wash-camo-effect.html

I'd get some of the matt dry ard coat stuff and paint it on where you want the frost then give a light dusting of baking powder its very fine so might work for what you are thinking of. Automatically Appended Next Post: That tutorial looks amazing! but a lot of work!
