Hello Dakka,
I was telling a friend that was proposing a list that featured allies, (he had dark angels as an ally with ravenwing) that the list is illegal because your HQ in an allied formation cannot alter the FOC. He challenged me to provide the page number as proof and I cant find it. Help me dakkaites!

Check the codex. If it requires the HQ to be in the primary detachment then it will say so.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Sometimes they can, sometimes they can't.
Dark Angel HQs that modify force org specifically say "in a primary detachment containing..." So you can't bring allied Deathwing as troops, for example.
However, there are some Force Org modifications that still work for allied detachments. I believe Eldar, you can bring a Spiritseer with some Wraithguard. Don't quote me on that, though. Don't have the book on me while at work to doublecheck if it says primary detachment or not.

I think I'm misreading your post but: Was Primary Detatchment Dark Angels with an Allied Detatchment of Dark Angels? Yeah, that's not legal... Did you perhaps mean something else?

You can not use Dark Angels ravenwing as a primary detachment and Dark Angels as an allied detachment. Was this a 2000 or more point game? If so you could have two primary detachments of Dark Angels.

I think a captain on a bike makes bikes troops for marines, regardless of force org.
But a chaos lord only makes cult marines into troops if he's in the primary detachment.
up to 2 characters can be taken for 1 HQ slot for space wolves, always.
But Daemon Heralds are only 1-4 in one slot in a primary detachment - an allied daemons army can only bring a single herald.
So check the codex, see what it says.
But you can't ally with the same codex, so Dark Angels can't ally with deathwing or ravenwing - they're part of the same codex.

I'm like 98% sure he meant his friend's list was something with DA as allies. The issue is that his friend planned to use Azreal or something in the allied detachment's HQ choice to make ravenwing troops and not have any DA tactical marines or scouts.
And yes, this is illegal, but only because he chose dark angels. For example if he used the space marine white scars instead of dark angels the HQ choice could easily make bike squads troops.

To be more specific, he had a 2500 point list that had draigowing as the primary with ravenwing for allies

Since this is the case then HJ has it 100%:

Check the DA codex for your answer.
