With the recent codexes Imperial Knights and Legion of the Dammed, we see that GW is truly stretching the idea of a codex. Frankly I like the imperial knight model and the rule book has decent fluff, but with only one unit i'm a tad disappointed and as for the Legion? well... that's a whole other ball of yarn. The point is that with GWs last quarterly report, its clear that corporate wants to try new things. To me though it seems like a no-brainer to make a "beasts of chaos" or "chaos monsters" codex that would include models from fantasy like the mutalith, chimera, chaos dragon, jabberslythe, perhaps dragon ogres and of course chaos spawn. It seems already referenced in the background that chaos sometimes mutates the creatures of a planet into monsters. El'Jonson is said to have led a crusade against "warp-tainted" monsters of his homeworld and the Thousand Sons base-planet in the eye of terror is said to be inhabited by human-beast hybrids.

Frankly it seems like an easy move for GW, the models already exist and most of the models and recent and highly detailed (the exception being the chaos dragon, but you could just use a vampire dragon, which looks awesome). The army would also act as a much needed addition to the "evil" allies chart since the Imperial forces already have so many choices. Chaos-influenced beasts would naturally work with CSM and demons, but could also work with Dark Eldar since they are known for the collection and use of wild creatures. If I were to make a basic FOC for the army, it would probably have greater daemons for an HQ (although they desperately need new models) and it would have Spawn as troops.

What do you guys think? Would you play a Chaos Monsters army and what other monsters would you include/not include in the codex? Do you think Minotaurs could be included for troops or perhaps trolls and would a hellpit abomination fit in with 40k?

Do you think chaos spawn would work as troops in 40k? I know in fantasy they have several such rules like random movement and unbreakable that is rarely seen on core choices. Im not sure what they're like for CSM, but im pretty sure they are beasts. if you asked me a month ago I probably would have proclaimed that almost all troops are infantry models of some kind and having a beast unit be a troop is not going to work.

Now though, with Imperial Knights, I feel like GW really bust down that barrier of objective-capturing troops being restricted to infantry. So I guess now, with super-heavy walkers capturing objectives, it doesn't seem that radical of a concept anymore for beasts, vehicles or (god forbid) flyers to capture objectives. I wonder though if GW will continue this trend of pushing the boundaries with different types of troops or will Imperial Knights be the main exception to the rule?

Actually, didn't they remove the Chaos Spawn random movement thing and buffed it well in the last CSM codex? I don't know. Personally, I think maybe using them as troops is not the greatest idea. I don't have codex CSM either (I do have the Fantasy Warriors of Chaos book though) so I can't really say for sure. Then again, I could be horribly wrong.

This sounds like quite an interesting idea by the way! I'm curious to see where this is going.
