Hey dakka,
So i am looking to start expanding my space marine collection into some forge world items.
I have noticed a couple of tournaments are starting to allow 40k approved forge world stuff. So with that said could any one provide me with some helpful incite on the following..
A) What are the "best" SM forge world units? I know that nothing is just the best.. by this i mean what are the go to units or the units generally regarded as must takes if there are any.
B) Which Imperial armor books are the best to buy as a space marine player? I want to go ahead and purchase a few but i want to make sure I'm spending in the right place.
C) Lastly i have heard about a dreadnought that has interceptor and a "lucious"..? Pattern drop pod. Both of which sound interesting.
If anyone knows which books these are in please let me know.
Oh and I'm running white scars.. with a few minor changes to the normal lists but just incase that helps with any advice.
Thanks guys!

a) as a reasonable cost, financially, first FW unit, a Contemptor pattern Dread isn't a bad shout, otherwise a couple of the Land Raider variants are fun, but do suffer from the inherent weaknesses common to LRs/all vehicles in 6th.
b) IA2 2nd Edition is your best starter, it is, in essence, "The Space Marine One"
c) Mortis pattern Contemptors benefit from interceptor (and Skyfire?) if they don't move. Pair that with a pair of Khares Assault Cannon and the missile launcher and you've got a very versatile and potent (if a bit high in points) fire base. The Lucius pattern Droppod allows a Dread to assault the turn it arrives, which is a very rare thing nowadays, but it is a lot of cash for something that can easily be proxied by a normal Pod IMO.

Lucius Pod doesn't allow assault on arrival anymore.
IMO, the best SM unit from FW is Sevrin Loth.

Are these still his latest rules, from the FW site? I don't know if he was updated in IA2.

He has the ability to select psychic powers, plus a pretty solid stat line. Not having to roll for powers makes him a really nice option, something that you can count on when writing a list.
Red Scorpions are a pretty nice chapter too.

Have you seen his new stats on the FW PDF? Lvl 3 psyker who can choose his powers (from 1 discipline), can get 2+ inv, part of the one of the best Chapter Tactics (Red Scorps), all for 175 points. He's pretty awesome.

No, you cannot. So you are stuck allying in a scout or tactical squad as well.
Without a doubt he's one of the top 5 space marine characters.....but so what? Needing to ally in additional troops really takes the shine off of him, especially since it's Red Scorpians, which are a rather useless chapter tactic.
Sure, he's a solid duelist....but marines should be aiming for ranged damage, and not punching people in the face.

I don't think that Red Scorpions's chapter tactic is useless, FNP for free seems pretty good to me. You do lose the ability to go to ground but that isn't the biggest loss, and you gain rerolls on pinning checks.

I would start with checking out FWs free downloads section, great material for free. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/fwDownloads
As for books the Imperial Armour 2 Second Edition is the one you want. It has almost all the SM units in it and the ones it doesn't have are in the new Apoc books (some in FW version and some in GWs version)
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Imperial_Armour_Books/IMPERIAL_ARMOUR_VOLUME_TWO_SECOND_EDITION.html
The absolute most useful forgeworld SM item is the red hunter chapter tactics. http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Downloads/Product/PDF/B/FWchaptertactics-v2.pdf The flexibility this provides most lists is just incredible.
Sevrin Loth is an incredible enabler but TAC squads with apothecaries are not as good as bike squads or scouting rhinos with ravenguard. I would rank them somewhere below iron hands who don't have to worry about some one killing the apoth and can GtG ( GtG is one of the most important abilities a troop unit has to allow it to score, the only thing better is being able to move to the objective in 1 turn). Still taking him with a TAC squad and a stormraven/quad gun for them to use is not bad. I prefer him for use with grav cents or an IG blobb squad though.
The contemptor mortis is a great model and extremely useful. I doubt you would regret getting one and you will find it to be a wonderful addition. It is not as powerful as some people would think as the firing arc and short range keeps it from intercepting as often as you want for such an expensive unit.
The air defense missile launcher is another great addition. Very useful against flyers and it can make for a great unit for a reserves base list as they can start on board and are very difficult to kill. You don't see them much as they are a HS choice though. With the new formations though perhaps this will be less of an issue.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space-Marine-Support/SPACE_MARINE_AIR_DEFENCE_MISSILE_LAUNCHER.html
The fire raptor is a great flyer but super expensive. I don't even know anyone who has bought it but the rules look very solid.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine_Aircraft/FIRE_RAPTOR_GUNSHIP.html
The Caestus assault ram is one of the best melee unit delivery vehicles in the game. It is again crazy expensive but if you want to run a big unit of TH/ SS termies I would recommend it with an upgraded skyshield landing pad or a comms relay as nothing is worse than 600+ pts not coming in until turn 4.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space_Marine_Aircraft/CAESTUS-ASSAULT-RAM.html
The whirlind scorpius is probably the most damage dealing tank the SM have access too. It is brutal and is relatively cheap pts wise. If you want to do a mechanized SM army you probably should look at it.
http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer-40000/Space_Marines/Space-Marine-Tanks/LEGION_DEIMOS_PATTERN_WHIRLWIND_SCORPIUS.html
The spartan assault tank is interesting and a tough nut to crack but you pay for it and most of its abilities will never be fully utilized.
A warhound titan is also another one to think about. Super expensive but a fantastic model. You can use it in 40K now but give people some warning and talk with your opponents as nothing ruins a game like a titan surprise.
The land raider achilles is probably the most useful land raider in the game due to it's weapons actually being worthwhile. The TFC is particullarily awesome.

Hope my forgeworld tour helped a little.

Relic Sicaran Battle Tank is one of the best units in Imperial Armour 2 - Volume 2. It's a beefed up Predator. An autocannon with heavy 6, ignore jink and rending?
