So yeah, as the title says, I have tournament coming up that works by every player having a primary force and a secondary force both composed of 1500 points, where you play with your primary until you take losses which you can get back by taking stuff from your secondary force (obviously if the unit doesn't exceed the points lost) after each match on a reserves roll. There's 5 games in total.

The Campaign is strictly Imperial Guard + Space Marines (all) vs Tau + Eldar, where on either side you can take the other force on the side as allies or as your secondary/primary/whatever. Also, no escalation/stronghold assault, Forgeworld is allowed.

So far, just for mostly fluff reasons, I'm thinking of running my light infantry IG contigent (recon themed) as my primary with a secondary armoured/mechanized contingent, the first list using C:IG and the second using C:IG and the FW Armoured Battle Group.

How you would you run two 1500 lists from these books with permanent losses?

5 games with permanent losses, take plenty of artillery, hide behind stuff and pummel the opponent.

Blob guard? 600 guard bodies or so between the 2 lists...

And by the end it will be just bodies. Lol...

In seriousness, yeah, go with survivability. 5 games is so many for that type of setup.

Is it the units lost are permanent or the models?

Also is forgeworld, escalation, or stronghold assault allowed?

I would probably agree that a properly supported artillery base with blob squads would be the most resilient answer.

If forgeworld and stronghold assault are allowed then I would create a void shield artillery base.

Another interesting take at it would be a DKoK assault list with respawing infantry squads.

Are they using standard deployment and scenarios from the rulebook or are all/most scenarios custom? For most rulebook missions, scoring units are pretty important, so I'd be tempted to run at least 8-12 scoring units between both lists. Big, survivable units with barebones gear would be more valuable than small, elite units with upgrades.

Have they playtested these wacky rules? During a typical 40K battle, casualties are usually pretty high. What's really going to be left of 3,000 points by game 4 or 5. What happens if someone gets tabled two games in a row? The idea sounds interesting, but the actual results may not be what they wanted or expected.

This sounds like a great idea. What happens to squads who have taken casualties but not totally destroyed? Do they get to replenish from reserves or play next game as-is?

I would cheat by using Chenkov. Just spend every match whittling down your opponents' forces.

Against eldar/tau? long range tanks, thunderfiers, and maybe some fliers. Make your first list an all comers list, make the second one a backup, filled with as many units that you think will die as possible. If your thunderfire cannon is a big target, include another in the second list, hell, include 2! Give your opponent high priority targets, and jam your second list full of them so you always have enough for the next game.

Some armies and list types are defiantly going to do better. I’d hate to be playing a drop pod list.

Interesting concept, not sure how fair it is to everyone.

Are there rules for retreating? That could make things a bit more balanced. If one side thinks they've got no chance against the other and any point, they can start moving stuff off the board. Removed stuff isn't dead for next game, but maybe gives your opponent extra points or something? It could lead to some cool scenarios where you have a rearguard sacrificing itself to allow important command and support elements to get off the board intact.

If units come back so long as one is left alive at the end of a game, just take artillery with large amounts of extra crew.

Also if forgeworld lists are allowed take the Armored Battle Group with the beasthunter shells and watch as the wraithknights and riptides cry.

Knowing your going up against Tau and Eldar exclusively gives you a huge advantage, you need no AA just take things that glance/pen vehicles and barrage weapons for killing troops.

While this is true, 40k isn't exactly known for being fair.

I agree with the Chenkov promoters, a nice wall of infantry with SITNW shielding a few artillery pieces would win be attrition in this scenario every single time.

I would probably go with a DKoK assault list from IA12. You can bring entire platoons back so all you could permanently loose would be support units and HQ.

Or you could take some chenkov SitNW conscripts for speed bumps/scoring and spam a bunch of artillery to provide the other necessary components. Basically you will need one of the two IG factions known for attrition based warfare to win this.

SM bike based armies could be good as they can run depleted bike units away. SM TAC squads should also be fairly resilient as they can split them into split into 2 units and keep one half the squad safe while the other gets munched.

Eldar have a pretty huge advantage in this though as they can make lists with no sacrificial or weak units. Tau will be a little trickier as they tend to take more casualties even when they win big. It will be hilarious to see their faces though when a grav spam SM player removes all their MCs in one game of the series.

The lists at the end of this should be interesting as many will probably totally lack troops or HQs by that time.

I love these "Campaign" tournaments! I just wanted to say that I think the idea is awesome.

As for your question, try to get some durable units that you can try to have survive. Deployment is going to be huge, obviously. But you can't go with Chaff and the high killability of your Troops is going to be a major disadvantage.

5000 pts High Elves 4000 pts, Warriors of Chaos 4000 pts, Dwarfs 3000 pts, Wood Elves and Greenskins too

Yeesh, the matchup seems a bit much. You gotta have a ton of Riptide killers or you'll be in big trouble.
