Got a small tournament coming up next month and was looking at running a new list for myself. I'm looking for feedback to see if this list is viable against possibly orks, crons, or chaos/demons. I was thinking of running Iron Hands CT. Not sure if that's good or not though. Thanks all in advance.

You can't purchase a drop pod without a unit as it is a dedicated transport.

The cheapest effective drop pod unit is 5 assault marines with 2 flamers trading in their jump packs for a free pod at 95pts.

Looks like a nice list although everytime I run Sternguard blobs I am disappointed. 5 with 5 combi melta come in, kill a tank and earn their points back. 10 come in, kill a target they cost twice as much as then die from focus fire because they are a huge threat. YMMV.

I think the Chapter Master needs a good weapon to make him threatening, try a Powerfist or Thunderhammer. Also , I prefer a multimelta on the Stormraven over heavy Bolters, but that's just my opinion.

As for the Sternguard, you might want to take only 5 combis on each and fill them both out to 10 man squads. Also, you may want to try Legion of the damned instead of one squad. They can be very effective at coming in and throwing down some ignores cover melta.

Thanks for the replies. I'm not sure how I missed the drop pod. I usually take a smaller tac squad and my pod fits it. I've found the sternguard squads combat squaded with meltas dropping in close to a couple of pieces of armor make their points back. I'm worried about armor. Is the assault squad a good option in a pod?

It is a decent anti infantry drop. A pod is normally 35 points so you are essentially only paying 60 points for 5 assault marines with two flamers. 5 tacticals with one flamer + pod is 115 points as a reference to the savings you get.

You can take the pod as a dedicated transport for troops and just not start them in it. It is completely possible to start off with an empty pod. Now why do you have the chapter master specifically? You can take a captain for 40 points less and the command squad that comes with the captain for 150 points and 5 meltas. That is a cheaper tank hunting unit then your sternguard and will do the same thing without making you feel sick to the stomach about throwing away 300+ points. Also keep your sternguard cheap and boltgun only. Take out 5 combi weapons and the meltaguns for 70 more points. With the 40 points from the captain that is an extra 100 points for say a thunderfire cannon. The only thing the chapter master brings you over the captain is an orbital bombardment (which you have nothing to abuse it with) and an extra wound.

what's the scout armament, I recommend shotguns on a set up like that, then you can charge out the top and attack small infantry units. add a flamer and suddenly your scary, yet easily ignored. punish them.
like truck boyz only better

I've used flamer assault marines, so much good comes out of that squad, even when I run them on foot.

I don't like the idea of a second sternguard squad, and your a bit low on scoring units. maybe switch out for a tac squad with a MM, MG, and a combi melta on the sarge. drop and then combat squad, the MM squad should have the sergeant in it. with this set up you have 2 melta shots and one snap shot that can hit other targets and the turn after you can use the MM as normal , place the sarge up front as once he has fired his melta shot he is just as disposable as a space marine but he can look out sir shots about and keep them off the MM man.

I'm kind of digging the idea of the podding assault marines. However I already have 3 fast attacks. I suppose I could throw in a hq and another tac squad and run a double foc but seems like its taking away from that true alpha strike I was going for. Thoughts on to keep the alpha strike going? maybe get rid of the speeders and put in the assault/pod unit, podding melta command squad, and maybe max out the bike squad?

Also instead of running double force org you can take another SM chapter as an ally. And if you are gonna take Drop pod Assault marines take Salamanders so you can reroll your flamers and Master craft your sergeants upgrade(what ever it is)

That's a good idea. And I know this is a YMDC kind of question, but how does the ally thing work with pods? If I only have one pod in the primary detachment and one in the ally detachment, do they both come in first turn?

No drop pod assault states your total drop pods rounding up so you would have 2 total. No where in the text does it say per army.

If you had 2 sternguard in drop pods and one assault squad in drop pod you would have 2 & 1 id suggest making the assault marines the ones in reserves.

Well a few changes to the new list:

1st Forget the drop pod for your main tactical squad either put them in a rhino or the stormraven your sacraficing alot of units to the enemy.

2nd Give the bikers Grav guns you wont be disapointed.

3rd Id give your Legion of the Damn sergeant a combi weapon - why not make use of thier ignore cover more.

4th IMO only load out for a storm raven is TL LC and TL MM you have enough anti horde you dont need more and they are free upgrades.

5th Teleport homers are only for terminators and your army includes none. Either give a drop pod(preferably you only have one) a locator beacon or use the points to give the sergeant a speecial weapon (if you are doing salamanders it becomes master crafted).

TBH id run a pure salamanders army with this list. sorta like this:

VUlkan 190
Commander Bike, Storm Shield, Power Weapon(Axe(MasterCrafted)) 125
Bikes x 4, Melta x 2, Combi Grav(MC), Melta Bomb, Attack Bike, MM 174
Bikes x 4, Melta x 2, Combi Grav(MC), Melta Bomb, Attack Bike, MM 174
Tactical Sqaud x 10 MG, ML, Combi Melta(MC) Rhino 205
Scouts x 5 Camo cloaks x 5 Snipers x 4 Combi Grav(MC) 79
Legion of the Damn MM, MG, Combi Melta or Grav(MC) 155
Sternguard x 7 MG x 2, Combi Flamer, Combi Melta, Combi Grav(Sergeant(MC)), Drop pod 229
Sternguard x 7 MG x 2, Combi Flamer, Combi Melta, Combi Grav(Sergeant(MC)), Drop pod 229
Assault Marines x 5 Flamers x 2 Drop pod 95
Assault Marines x 5 Flamers x 2 Drop pod 95
Stormraven MM LC 200

w/ 50 free points to spare
Just for clarification Legion of the damn melta weapons are master crafted =)
