Right!

I want to build 20 Ultramarine Deathwatch/Legion of the Damned, which I will use with LOTD rules.

I'll paint them black, with skull coloured helms and a shoulder pauldron painted in Ultramarines colours, maybe with just occasional flecks and hints of flames.

Any ideas of which kits/bits to use how to approach the project?

There are some Night Lords heads coming from Forgeworld soon which may do well for you:

Alternately, you could paint them with some flames and skull heads from the fantasy skeleton sprue:

What’s your angle from a fluff perspective? You’ve got a lot going on here, and I’m trying to figure out how it fits.

Generally Deathwatch is a mix of chapters. I could see having a few Ultras in a unit, but 20 seems high.

Do you want to include the spectral/mystic/skeletal aspects on the LotD? Or use living marines, with normal gear, just the LotD rules?

I’ve not read the new fluff for LotD, but I could see a way to cover all of the above. If you subscribe to the theory that the LotD is not just Fire Hawks, but the spirits of all sorts of marines martyred over the years, we have something to work with. Over the centuries, many Ultramarines have died in service to the Deathwatch, far from Macragge, their gene seed never returning to the chapter. But for reasons as mysterious as the LotD themselves, these lost souls have not forsworn their oaths to the chapter, and return when the need is great. Perhaps it was the tyranids, or damnos; but the chapter needs their hard-won knowledge of the Xenos, and not even death shall stop them from serving their chapter once more.

So you end up with skull-headed, burning marines, with a flame motif on their armor, but the silver deathwatch shoulder on one side, and the blue on the other. And some lightly twisted fluff, that may or may not be sobbing in the corner.

Hmm, I'm thinking Ultramarines LoTD with the same principles as you Nev. Enough Ultramar heroes to become LoTD, avenging warriors. Rather than the whole plague fire hawks idea.

Only thing is, I'm not a huge fan of flames on the armour.. it doesn't really give a "spectral" feel for me. Skull helm yes.

Perhaps skull helmet, ultra icons, black armour with white trimmings/aquila etc. Maybe touches of red flecked with orange on knees etc.

One thing you might want to try is a ghostly OSL coming from the cracks in the armor.

Or full-on specters, doing the whole mini in an early green-white. Well, a blue-white might be more appropriate.

Interesting idea. Maybe a green white, busting from the eye lenses, aquilae and other bits and pieces, perhaps snaking out as though some sort of spectral lightning...
