Hey guys I have recently got into the hobby with a few friends and was thinking of writing a 1500 point list to work towards. My chosen army is Eldar because I really like the idea of psychic powers. I do not have a codex yet but my friend suggested something called a FarseerCouncil? hence my name. My question is firstly what is a FarseerCouncil and secondly what should I buy to work towards a 1500 point army.

2 farseers on bikes with 7-8 warlocks on bikes with an allied in dark eldar special character. Can be very nasty and puts out allot of powers.

That sounds like something I would enjoy as when reading through the rulebook I really liked the psychic abilities of some characters. If I were to make a 1500 point list with them what would it look like?

I myself dont actually run seerstar, as i dont ahev the dark eldar models to accompany them, but generally the seerstar, then troops for scoring (maybe 1-2 dire avenger squads in serpents and some jetbikes) then a wraithknight for heavy support

It is, however, a very hard army to play and not really suited to someone new to 40k. Because it requires a good knowledge of movement phase and shooting phase, terrain placement, psychic powers from 5 different discplines, etc. I play Eldar for a few years now and I'm not sure how well I'd play with it.
Point being, it might be easier to just buy two battleforces and a Farseer to start with. Everything in those battleforces is useful whatever direction you want to take after you learn the ropes.

If you want fun with Eldar I would try and get hold of one of the limited edition wraith boxes they did and add in some Wave Serpents, a Farseer, a Council and a couple of Spiritseers. Should be about £250 all in and a good laugh.

You picked arguably the best codex in the game right now, whcih means most things in the codex are good. If youre just starting out, for reasons stated above, i wouldnt start seerstar. Try some of the more fun and still very competitive models, guardians/da in wave serpents, big blob of 20 guarians with two heavy weapons and a farseer, wraithguard in serpents, definitely buy 1 Wraithknight, warwalkers, warpspiders(guys are super awesome and amazingly fun).
Also one thing you want to do whenever your making your list is almost always, and i would argue always, bring 2 units of min jetbikes (3) with no upgrades in reserve. These two units will win you games by coming on the field turn 3, 4 or 5 and turboboosting or simpley riding onto objectives. Seriously they are so good.

I compleatly disagree with all the above posts, the seer council is hard to use in general, but it will quickly help you learn how to control fazes of the game, in addition I normally play it in competitive tournaments only (though ive been using it since 4th ed) you should be fine using it in normal games.

It's not a begginer's army. Even if you like a challenge, it's still not a good army to begin with, not the least because it's probably the strongest army of them all, atm.

Araenion I don't understand what you mean by "beginner's army" is it an army which consists of spam units or running 80 guardians?
The real reason is a "beginner's army is what ever models you happen to have when you start. I stick by if you want to learn quickly (and the council will force you to learn quickly) then by all means take them and have fun, or if you want an army which is so forgiving it makes space marines in 5th look like sisters of battle take 6 wave serpents and never learn how to truly play.
Maybe I look to much into it because everyone (and i mean everyone) at my LGS plays WAAC which makes it competitive and satisfying when you are able to win.

Running a seer council as a new player is probably a terrible idea.
It's an army of finesse, and really takes experience to field well. Mainly because it requires many things to work in concert and deep knowledge of special rules for effective use.
Plus, if you're modelling them yourself, it can be a real pain, depending on how you choose to do so. I converted my council from actual farseer and warlock models, requiring a bunch of pinning, greenstuffing and other modelling work.
If you're new to 40k, and want to win with Eldar, just buy a bunch of Wave Serpents, Avengers/Guardians, Warp Spiders and a Wraithknight or two. You'll be fine

Most people that ask me "what should I use for the council?" I say just use the bikers with some conversions, I used wolf cloaks from empire, and with the new WB kit, use their glaives, though the hands are slightly bigger, if your any good with green stuff there is a way around it, for helmets I recommend avenger heads, or again you can convert something just as cool.
I am not a huge fan of buying actual warlocks/seers just because it makes the unit ungodly expensive and unless your a good modeler the end result is far less then perfect.

Okay, it seems as though the SeerStar is not to be taken lightly and seems to be an army that requires immense skill to make work. I borrowed some models from my friend today (he has bought two of the battle forces I think?) I played against his CSM with this list
HQ - Farseer
Troops - 20x Guardians w/2x Brightlances
Troops - 5x Dire Avengers w/Wave Serpent + Scatter Laser
Troops - 5x Dire Avengers w/Wave Serpent + Scatter Laser
Fast Attack - Eldar Vyper w/2x Shuriken Cannons
- 750
It was a really enjoyable game and he was helping me to learn both my codex and the core rules of the game. The list worked well for me even though his heldrake? the dragon thing... killed like half my army and because it was a flier I couldn't really hurt it. Would getting a battle-force or two be better than starting with the council? Also is there anything else I could do to improve the list I played to better handle his heldrake?

Your aa at 750 is pretty good with the serpents, you just need to cast guide on the vypers and have them hop behind the drake and then its dead.

Conversely I believe it's a fantastic army to start with for the very same reason this fellow seems to think it's a poor choice. As was stated the army does require learning a lot about all of the phases of the game... Let that sink in... You're new to the game and need to learn all of the rules, this army will teach you a LARGE majority of the important rules and once mastered will leave you with a top tier army should you pursue local tournaments or even larger events.
Units that you should also consider are Wraith knights and wave serpents. These will also teach you new rules about Monstrous Creatures and Vehicles!
I say go for the council. Has a higher learning curve, but if you've played a video game in your life it's really not that hard and will be very rewarding.

Wow someone else on this forum thinks ahead.
As for learning game mechanics, using serpents and WK spam would kind of defeat the whole point, as they allow a lot of room for error.
