My friend is taking on Nids soon, he's running Typhus and was planning to DS him with 3 Nurgle Mutilators. He's also running a LR as well, so would it be safer to drive them in that? Or would Termis be a safer bet than Mutilators, DS or transport?

Ds with oblits. Choose plasma cannon or heavy flamers on hordes of nids. Facing nids you need more guns instead of lr.

Land Raider with 8 Plagues. Dead hard of a unit to crack even after they pop the LR, plague knives give them re-rolls to wound vs. Marines- throw on VOTLW for re-rolls to hit in first round of combat, 3 attacks on the charge and they can pull off a surprisingly strong assault. I3 will be a pain but Typhus is striking last anyhow and the Asp Champ you use to absorb challenges from Typhus will be much more resilient allowing Typhus to scythe the rest of the squad down. Also will have 9 models that can legitimately harm an MC.

Also if you run into a scenario where you absolutely have to pop off destroyer hive with the squad around him at least you'll get a FNP save on top of a 5+ to wound.

I have always used oblits. Typhus helps the oblits stay on the board. The oblits themselves are actually pretty decent in CC. This is more for a Typhus you are using the psychic powers to support your army with. The best thing about this unit is that there is nothing it isn't good against. I have never once taken this unit and wished I hadn't because the opponent doesn't have some unit type.

If you want to go CC and depend on Typhus to do something then you absolutely need a challenge monkey champ to keep typhus out of challenges where he tends to get his face smashed in against other similarly priced models. This usually means 3 options.

1) MoN terminators, they DS in to deliver their combi weapon doom and then charge in the turn after. The terminators are pretty decent in CC and can with their large bases with a little work you can avoid most of the destroyer hive damage. This is probably the best option after oblits. They are good against anything just make sure you equip the terminators to suit their tasks.

2) Foot it with a large blobb of cultists. This is probably the worst option to actually get typhus into combat but it does occupy the midboard to a significant degree. You will however need an ADL or other protection for the cultists to avoid loosing movement to massive casualties.

3) Landraider with Plaguemarines. If you support this with Be'Lakor putting invisibility on the landraider then this will almost assuredly connect with your target. The only problem being that this combination is extremely expensive for a unit which can be chumped by a number of other dedicated CC units with lower prices. I would avoid MC that are also characters these will almost assuredly eat through your expensive deathstar over the course of 3-4 turns by challenging out the champ, then Typhus and smashing them to pulp. MC that are not characters are not a problem but AV13+ walkers will also be a challenge, bring some melta bombs on the champ or prepare to cry when an imperial knight walks up to your deathstar and eats through it.

I currently use 2 Nurgle Oblits.

But for the same amount of points I could take 4 MoN terminators, 2 combi's, with a Champ to Challenge sacrifice.

Decisions decisions.....

The packaging he came in. Then leave him in there. He isn't that great. But if your attaching him to oblits. Deep strike is the way to go.
