I've taken rough riders exactly once. I lost two of them in dangerous terrain and the others all missed with their hunting lances. I always liked the idea of cavalry in the 40k universe, particularly if you model them on some alien creatures. But it seems like, if the IG have access to cavalry, they're not taking full advantage of that mobility. I know a lot of folks mount their CCS in a chimera, but I'd like the option to mount them on horses and give them the mobility to deliver their commands across the battlefield (perhaps for fewer points than the chimera). This would be especially beneficial for platoon squads, with their 6" command range. I also really like the image of a platoon captain charging across the battlefield, dodging laser blasts to rally the infantry in the trenches. It's very reminiscent of early WWI, when commanders were still charging cavalry into machine gun lines.
