Try the General forum. It will generate better responses, as this is not a rules question.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I'll bite..... My favourite 40k army is Tau. Tau weren't my first army (I bought DV first to get the rulebook but I knew I would be buying Tau once I moved to a different army). I was such a noob so had no idea if they were good or not (was going to collect them before the new codex) but I really liked the models (XV8 suits the most). I like the story a ton (usually no interested in the fluff all that much) but I really liked their fluff after I bought the codex. Play wise I think they are alright (not really a ton of variation in how they play because everyone using Jump shoot jump and stay out of combat) not as overpowered as some people play them because I play them slightly differently i.e no riptides, I use piranhas and stealth suits. Not a whole lot of variation in some of the tournament lists for them but if you just play for fun they have a decent selection. I like the Kroot and Vespids and wish they make a Kroot Mercenaries supplement that would be awesome. I still think Skaven are my favorite GW army but that isn't 40k

Dark Eldar are my favorite. The models have a lovely design theme, the rules are delightful, and they are entertaining to play.

The imperial guard. A force made up of anything you want. Club men, mutants, Airbourne, armour, rank and file, light infantry. If you want it, chances are the guard can be it.
I personally dont like anything in 40k except the guardm and only because I can make them unique and contain elements of historic uniform and so on.
I love how no 2 regiments are the same (unfortunately Cadians seem to be the most popular, but everyone loves something different). There is no set asthetic of play style. They are the most flexible, customizable, cheapest (if you dont use GW) and have the most options over all.
I use mercenaries, detachments from other regiments, huge titans, fliers, tanks, transports and the list goes on. Endless conversions and themes. Not many armies (if any) comes close to the guard in terms of individuality and so on.

Orks hands down I can loot anything I want so modeling is endless. Plus they are a blast to play well for me at least even if the took a edition 6 book smack I still enjoy them the most to play for casual play. You can make them anything you want using what ever you want,

Whatever you want.
Screw what the tournament players say, whatever army draws you is what you should play. If I wanted to win, I would play Tau. If I wanted to Field unfluffy, unfun lists I would play grey knights.
Yet I choose to play Black Templars.
Yes, I lose many, many games with my massive blobs of chainsword armed maniacs. Yes, I will never, EVER field a devastator squad or a centurion devastator squad, no matter how effective they are. My ideal army is what I want, what appeals to me.

The ideal army is one you like the look and feel of that also plays in a way that makes sense to you on the battlefield. For me, that'd be either Space Marines or Imperial Guard. Everything does what it looks like it does, almost everything has an aesthetic that really appeals to me, and I'm reasonably effective with both on the tabletop. The fact that a very good number of BL books support both armies mean I've also got a pretty constant source of inspiration as well.

I'd have to go with Imperial Guard as well - I love the background and always feel like the underdog when I'm playing. I can't even tell you how many times I've marked the underside of a guardsman's base after he did something heroic (like my lone guy who rolled double 1's to regroup and later did the final wound to a demon prince... what a boss).
There is a ton of variation with IG and I never have a dull game with them, most likely because they aren't as all or nothing as my Grey Knights who tend to either win big or get in trouble early. My games usually last until the later turns with a few broken squads of guardsmen hanging on until the end. The only complain I have is that deployment is a pain in the arse. I'm also praying the new Codex doesn't ruin my fun...

I'm having alot of fun slowly building a new CSM army. Daemons are Battle Brothers, so tons of chaos options.
If you've been playing Orks for a while, I believe CSM are Allies of Convenience with Orks, so there's that, too.

Ideal is the one you like, the one you want to paint.
You can have one that loses more than wins but still love it and craft it, enjoy it, not just the one that wins every battle.

There's a number of ways I could take that, and a number of jokes I could make out of it, but I'm going to take the high road and say that we're functional with metal, it's simply not ideal.

I own Eldar and Nids, with Nids as my first army (back when they got EW from Synapse, I miss those days). I enjoy both, but seem to have more fun with Nids. Eldar games always seem to be one sided...The nice thing about Nids is there are multitudes of builds. Whether or not certain builds are effective is another topic, but nothing like placing a 1750 point army down and then due to not having any Synapse all your troops just leave. They look across the board see 4 Rhinos, turn around and walk off. Just like that. First Blood to your opponent, no way to win other than completely annihilating the enemy. It was rather entertaining to say the least.

I personally play BA. I like the speed of dark eldar, but hate feeling like my army is made of glass. Therefore: the speedy marines. Also I'm terrible at painting and need simpler more uniform looking models. And there's always the possibility of proxying other marines.
The only thing I wish I could snag from another army for fun's sake is the daemon warp storm. I always feel some amount of elation when the warp storm roll is coming up, even if I'm not in the game.

My ideal army is one that gets to participate in every part of the game. Where I can make a 40/60 shooty/assaulty or assaulty/shooty army that can perform well as needed. I hate it when a phase of the game is just something to do to get to the next part. Movement, shooting, assaulting, and even reserves placement should all play an equal part in getting the win.
Not since 4th have I felt that the rules allowed for a somewhat balanced approach to all sides of the game.

I feel ya, I think Orks do this well. Now mind you I know their shooting is terrible but the mere fact that you have no idea if they're going to have a lousy shooting phase(95% of the time) or come thru with flying colors. Nothing is more bad ass when your 15 lootas get 3 shots a piece. Or when your 30 Shoota boys get charged by a C'tan and you get 4 overwatches hits that he doesn't save. My green tide has surprised me way more than my space marines ever have
