So, i just can't make my mind up on what to start in WHFB. I was originally thinking about vamps, but then saw how magic-dependent they are and kinda backed off a bit. I really want something that either has a nice, tight-knight core of soldiers with decent magic and shooting, or a massive hordey, machine and magic army. Anything fit the criteria?

It sounds like you are after an Empire Army; some magic, hoards of troops with swords, spears and guns, knights, zany machines like the steam tank or magical chariots.
Basically, the Empire has a little of everything.

Sounds like Empire to me - can do anything, currently focused fairly heavily on knights. Hordey can mean anyone these days, but if you wanted to emphasise that and the machines then it'll be Skaven.

Lizerdmen have awesome models!
As for their rules, they have very strong and unkillable mages, and they are quite resilient. On the downside, they have poor shooting phase, and are generally slow.

Lizards have awesome magic, are lead by gigantic frogs and ride dinosaurs.
They have got short range shooting and the saurus blocks can take a long time to move, and they are slow in close combat, but are very tough and rarely run.

Well, it's starting
Aztec
Friking
Lizards
Here's why:
They can have a fast, scouting force, a massive clubby force or a giant screw-everything-with-hordes-of-scales force.
My idea is something like this:
Temple guards and preists as a hard-hitting punishing core, with scout forces to harass and back up, using terradons and ripperdons as necessary. Also have the potential to use massive dinos when needed, cos DINOS.

I don't like the Lizardmen models. I wish I did. But they all kind of look the same. Riperdactyls look completely foolish. Cold One riders look like Flintstones. And skinks are too small.
The more I look at Dwarfs the more I think they really have a lot going for them in terms of options.
I think the new BRB IF (big if) it makes magic and magic items much expanded, that can help other armies. Especially HE and such who can give small magic items to their unit leaders.

Temple Guards aren't really shock troops as such. They're incredible guards for your Slaan, particularly with Chakax, as plenty of abilities activate (Fear, Immune to Psychology). They can back up a hefty core of Saurus well, as it keeps your Slaan close to the action while protecting them.

Love it how you say skinks are too small, then talk about dwarfs...
XD
Besides, it's too late, first box coming in a couple of days.

Skink are awesome. 10 units of 10 skinks is a better protective bunker for a Slann than temple guard. The only issue is that they have troubles actually killing things.
Saurus are cool too, but basically need buffs in order to function well. I1 kind of hurts them as well, and means that even Ogres are striking before them.

It's not their height. It's they are so weedy. I'm no sculptor, but it looks like a skink is waaay less than half the surface area or plastic. They feel very spindly and cheap to me.
But that's me. GL on your army.
