Last night a friend needed a make up game for our local, weekly league and he was ok with me running a tournament list I've been working on. It's always a good, fun game whenever I play this guy so I was looking forward to doing my first playtest game against him.

Deathwing won deployment roll but opt to deploy second. Deathwing fail to steal the initiative

Pre-Game

I have been working on this list in paper and in dice simulators for a bit and felt like it was time to take it out for a spin. Knowing this, I still wanted to see how it would do against my friend's terminators and how some of the tricks actually do in a game. Since it's a different style of list than what I am used to, I wanted to push it and be more aggressive just to see how things go. I was anticipating on making a few mistakes but I'm confident I'll be able to win rather decisively. The only disadvantage I have in this game is his complete lack of Heavy Supports - I have to play to the 3 objectives and try and secure 2 of them.

Deployment

All perspectives is from my (necron) point of view.

Board Setup

In my opponent's deployment zone, he had an imperial statue and a cave like piece of terrain on the left, a large piece of LOS blocking terrain with area terrain on top in the center, and then a forested area on the right. In my zone, I had a small hill on the left along with my bunker and another couple mounds as we proceed right.

We rolled 3 objectives with my opponent placing 2 in his deployment zone (1 on top of the large area terrain piece is a Skyfire Nexus and 1 in the forested area which turns into a Grav Generator). My single objective I placed behind the bunker (sabotaged) so I can grab it easily late game if needed.

Necrons Deployment
In the bunker, I placed the Vindicare to make him nice and safe. On top of the bunker was Coteaz and the Monkey. Left of the bunker I deployed my unit of spyders with all 3 ICs. Finally, 1 AB on each side of what I have already deployed. 3 Night Scythes with warriors inside are in reserve.

Dark Angels Deployment

1 tactical squad was placed in each of the 3 sections of his deployment zone; the center and (his) left flank being deployed onto objectives. His land raider was deployed centrally behind the LOS/Area terrain piece in a way that it was out of sight for my bunker.

Necrons Turn 1
- Zahndrekh had nothing to remove from the Dark Angels.
- Zahndrekh gave my right AB Night Fighting
- Orikan Powered Up (fail!)
- Coteaz Casts Prescience on the Monkeys. Precognition on himself.

Spyder-star teleports to the left side of my opponent's deployment zone and shoots Zahndrekh's Staff of Light as well as Orikan's Transdimensional Beamer at the tactical marine squad that isn't defending any objectives. Zahndrekh failed to wound but Orikan's beamer sucks up 1 normal marine.

Both Annihilation barges move 12". The one that now has Night Fighting shoots at the centrally located squad and lands 6 hits thanks to tesla but all saves are made. The other barge flats out as there are no good targets to fire.

The assassin is able to see the central Tactical Marine squad and selects the Plasma Cannon model since it's within 36". Selecting the "Wound on 2+" ammo, he hits but rolls a 1 to wound.

Monkeys fire into the central unit as well with their Lascannon shots but cover saves are made.

(In retrospect, I realized I forgot to fire the emplaced Quad Gun in automated firing mode at the end of phase; however, I don't think it would have made a difference against the 2+ cover save the closest unit gets).

Dark Angels Turn 1
- No Psychic Powers cast
- All 3 Terminator squads will Deathwing Assault turn 2
- Orikan's Temporal Snares are in effect (difficult terrain everywhere)

Land Raider attempts to move up but becomes immobilized due to Orikan's ability. This forces the knights to disembark prematurely for my opponent; however, it also keeps the land raider behind cover from my own ranged guns that could hurt it.

Tactical marines moved closer to my spyder-star and shoot at it. Causing no wounds.

Necrons Turn 2
- Orikan triggers reserve roll ability
- Orikan Shrinks (fail again!)
- Zahndrekh gives his unit Furious Charge
- Coteaz casts Prescience on the Monkeys; Precognition on himself.
- All 3 Night Scythes come on thanks to Orikan.

Night Scythes move on and each fire onto separate tactical marine squads weakening each.

Annihilation barges move in and blast the unit off of the skyfire nexus objective (First Blood).

Monkeys and Assassin fire into the knights but do no wounds due to invulnerable saves.

Spyder-star charges into the remaining 2 marines in front of them and kill them via Hammer of Wrath.

(Again - forgot to use the quad gun)

Dark Angels Turn 2
- Zeak casts Prescience on Knights
- All 3 Terminator squads Deathwing Assault on.

The first Deathwing squad drops onto the area terrain and skyfire nexus w/o scattering nor taking any dangerous terrain wuonds. The second deep strikes on my left flank, out of range from Coteaz's ability. The third attempts to deep strike to the right of the bunker, again outside of Coteaz's ability, but scatters off of the board and becomes delayed. The Assassin uses the Quad Gun to intercept the unit on the Skyfire Nexus but fails to wound.

The Deathwing squad on my right unload into Coteaz and the monkeys - only killing 1 monkey (morale test passes). The Cyclone missile launcher termy on the skyfire nexus aims at the Night scythe and causes a glancing hit. The Land Raider's Autocannon inflicts 1 penetrating hit onto the same Night Scythe but only gets a Crew Shaken result which is successfully ignored by the Scythe. Using Power of the Machine Spirit, the Land raider uses its multimelta and penetrates (but doesn't explode) the closest Annihilation Barge.

The Knights charge the now-weakened AB and destroy it. (+1 Heavy Support Point)

Necrons Turn 3
- Zahndrekh gives Counterattack to the Spyder-star
- Coteaz casts Prescience on Monkeys, Precognition on himself.

All 3 Night Scythes fly off the board.

Obyron teleports the spyders between the terminators and Coteaz. Zahndrekh misses all of his shots but Orikan's Beamer removes the terminator sergeant.

Monkeys plus Coteaz's Eagle shoot at the same terminator squad only killing 1.

The remaining Annihilation Barge and the Vindicare take aim at the Knights since Zeak is the closest model - failing to cause any wounds.

Quad-gun automatically fires at the terminator squad weakened by Orikan, Coteaz, and the Monkeys...killing another terminator and leaving the chainfist and plasma cannon left in the squad.

Dark Angels Turn 3
- Zeak casts Hallucination onto the Spyder-star but is denied by the Gloom Prism.
- Last Deathwing squad comes on center field within 6" of Belial to not scatter.

Knights advance to midfield.

The terminators on the skyfire nexus advance towards the last Annihilation Barge since it's within charge distance. The other set of midfield terminators do the same. Both units shoot at the barge and deal 1 glance to it.

The terminators by Coteaz fire the plasma cannon at them but it get's hot instead (save is made).

The terminators from the skyfire nexus charge the Annihilation barge through terrain and just make it. 7 penetrating hits but not a single explosion. (+1 heavy support point).

Necrons Turn 4
- Zahndrekh gives Furious Charge to the Spyder-Star
- Coteaz casts Prescience on the Monkeys; Precognition onto himself.

Night Scythes come in and position themselves properly to address current objective holders and to drop warriors next turn. 2 of which firing at the skyfire nexus related unit of terminators, 2 die.

Coteaz & Monkeys fire at their terminators and kill the chain fist terminator - only the plasma cannon remains. The assassin decides to attempt to snipe Zeak with the turbo-penetrating ammo and succeeds - 2 wounds on Zeak.

While not optimistic, I wanted to seize the play test opportunity and moved the spyder-star towards the Knights. Zahndrekh and Orikan fail to remove any Knights and they then charge.
Orikan challenges and the Knight Master accepts. Knight Master only hits once but Orikan makes the invulnerable save. Orikan hits all 4 times due to his weapon's ability but only wounds twice - both of which are saved due to the Knight Master's invulnerable save.

Belial and Zeak swing and cause a number of precision strikes - targeting the gloom prism spyder and killing it. The rest of the knights go into smite mode and swing away dealing 5 wounds with a Spyder, Zahndrekh, and Obyron in base to base. I decide to take 1 invulnerable save on Zahndrekh....fails and is doubled out >.<. I Look Out Sir the rest one at a time with Obyron and put 2 wounds on each of the last spyders.

Obyron and the Spyders return attacks and kill 2 knights. Both units are fearless.

Zahndrekh fails to resurrect (Warlord!)

Dark Angels Turn 4
- Zeak casts prescience on Knights
- Zeak casts Hallucination on Spyder-star but fails test.

The Land Raider seizes the opportunity and shoots at the already damaged Night Scythe which was conveniently placed in front of it again - wrecking it.

The long Plasma Cannon Terminator shoots at Coteaz and the Monkeys, scattering but still hitting the building - removing the void shield. He charges into Coteaz and the Monkeys. Monkeys switch to Heavy Flamers and cause 4 Wall of Flame hits but and 2 wounds which were saved. Coteaz uses his Eagle and gets 1 hit through that drops the terminator in overwatch.

Obyron attempts to do a Glorious Intervention for Orikan and succeeds! Sadly, Neither the Knight Master nor Orybron succeed to wound each other.

Zeak, Belial, and the rest of the knights swing the remaining 2 spyders and Orikan. They kill both remaining spyders with precision strikes and wound Orikan once. (+1 Heavy Support Point). Orikan swing back himself and is able to kill a knight.

Necrons Turn 5
- Coteaz casts Prescience on Monkeys; Precognition on himself.

Warriors from the destroyed Night Scythe walk on and provide a second unit controlling the sabotaged objective behind the bunker.

Obyron uses his Ghostwalk Mantle to remove Orikan and himself from combat. They deep strike behind the Land Raider and within 12" of the terminators on the skyfire nexus.

The remaining Night Scythes move toward my opponent's two objectives and drop their warriors within contesting range. Both sets are into the last 2 tactial marines that are holding the grav generator objective and kill them.

Orikan and Monkeys attempt to damage some of the 3 remaining terminators on the skyfire nexus without any luck.

Assassin shoots to try and kill a knight but he makes an invulnerable save. Quad-gun attempts the same under the automated profile but saves are made as well.

End of turn, void shield fails to come back online.

Dark Angels Turn 5
Zeak breaks off from the knights and moves in front of the bunker and hits Coteaz with Mind Worm but fails to wound. He attempts to charge the monkeys but dies from their wall of fire.

Belial and the Knights move up and charge the warrior unit behind the bunker - wiping the squad.

The skyfire nexus terminators shoot and kill 1 warrior in front of them.

The mid-field Assault Cannon terminators advance towards the warriors on the grav generator objective and kill 1.

The land raider opens the hurricane bolter on the warriors contesting the skyfire objective with power of the machine spirit and fails to wound. The rest of the land raider's guns go after the grav generator objective and kills all but 1.

No warriors resurrect but all morale tests are passed.

We roll and the game continues!

Necrons Turn 6
- Coteaz casts Prescience on the Monkeys; Precognition on himself.

Both Night Scythes fly off hoping for a turn 7 return.

Orikan advances towards the skyfire nexus terminators. He beams 1 off the board! He attempts to charge the terminator but fails the charge due to difficult terrain.

Obyron moves towards the Land Raider; charges in and wrecks it.

Coteaz splits from the monkeys and hops down from the battlement to prepare the knights. His eagle attacks but doesn't cause an unsaved wound. He charges in and enters a challenge with the Knight Master which results in 0 net wounds on either side.

Monkeys, Assassin, and Warriors fire at the skyfire nexus terminators and kill 1 so only the cyclone terminator remains. Warriors charge and suffer no wounds but also deal no wounds to the last terminator.

Dark Angels Turn 6
Last free squad of assault terminators move up to contest the objectives with the 1 warrior. The shoot and remove it to fully claim it.

The cyclone terminator at the skyfire objective attempts to kill some warriors but only manage to kill 1. The warriors do not do any wounds but also do not fail their morale test.

Coteaz manages to kill the Knight Master.

We roll to see if the game continues but it does not.

Game Over 8-2 Dark Angels Victory
Dark Angels - (Warlord, Line Breaker, 3 Heavy Supports, 1 Objective)
Necrons - (First Blood, Line Breaker)

Post game

First time playing the list and it was fun. Both myself and my opponent agreed that had I NOT wanted to test my mettle against his knights, I probably would have won. Even so, I still lost and I also made a number of bad mistakes throughout the game concerning unit placement. The fact that I let both of my Annihilation barges get assaulted is a big example of the other mistakes I made.

This was also the first time I took Orikan out and I am extremely impressed. It sucked that I made him grow and shrink the first two turns but I brought him more for every other trick he comes with. Difficult Terrain on turn 1 for my enemy was great though his land raider being immobilized in a position that I couldn't' shoot at it was annoying - more so with the fact that he could defend both of his objectives from there as well. Rerolling reserves was very helpful as well as the beamer sucking up a few terminators.

My Grey Knight and fortification detachment worked well but hit issues concerning cover and invulnerable saves. The vindicare didn't perform quite like I had hoped but there's a few things I can think of that I can do next time. I am glad that I put him inside the bunker with the ammo store so he had a 2+ rerollable to hit instead of his BS8 2+/4+. Also, putting him on a quadgun is amusing for interceptor. Being automated though, the quadgun is just as annoying. Had I not been up against terminators, I would see this being even more effective.

Overall, I like my list and the data/experiences the game gave me. Should a rematch occur, I have no doubt that I'll win and not make some of the planned and unplanned mistakes that I did in this game.
