I posted this in the new I.G. (or A.M.) Rumors thread in the Rumors discussion board but wanted to pose it here to the general discussion and see what folks thought of the idea.

I'm very tempted to try something out and wonder if anyone sees a glaring issue with the concept. I'd like to consider using my Vostroyans with the new White Dwarf Stormtrooper/Tempestus Scions rules. The Vostroyans have the (very) ornate Lasguns I could conceivably call Hotshot Lasguns for WYSIWYG purposes, and they also have armor that resembles Carapace Armor across the board as well (Full breastplate, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gauntlets and knee-length greatcoats). It would be an interesting way to field my army to be sure. The only thing I wouldn't be able to adequately represent would be the Hot Shot Volleygun. Beyond that, it seems like they'd work very well as counts-as 'Scions'. Of course the main glaring issue is that their lasguns don't have the power pack on the back of the model, and cabling running around to the lasgun from said backpack. Though, as I said, the lasrifles are very ornate and baroque, so despite not having the power pack and cabling I could get away with calling them Hot-shot lasguns all the same.

I may just try this in the near future, we'll see. Would anyone have an issue with seeing Vostroyan Firstborn being used to represent Scions though? If you were to square off against a Vostroyan Firstborn being used as a counts-as Scions army, would you agree to play against it or not?

Just curious as to what people think. Thanks everyone, take it easy.

Nah, I wouldnt mind at all. A guardsmen can be used as anything human at the end of the day. And vice versa.

They have a fair amount of armor on them and look pretty good once you lop off the silly heads.

Go for it I say!

See, I personally LOVE the giant furry hats. I can understand why some folks may not like them, to be sure, but I find them to be amazingly unique and enjoy the look of them on the tabletop.

Sure the hats are kind of silly, but that's why I love them. The way I look at it is this: In Imperial Vostroya, HAT WEAR YOU!

I do love the conversions you've done with those head swaps (and las-rifle shortening) there, Slavetodorkness. Looking very good.

Thanks for the feedback thus far guys.

I agree. The first guardsmen I got where Vostroyans and I loved them. If there is one thing I love in a Guard army its blatant impracticality. Like bright uniforms or riding horses etc.

I can definitely see them as scions given their ornate look and would have no problem playing against them as such.

On moon miranda.

Vostroyans are by nature supposed to be a Carapace army (they were when originally released in 4th ed), and as noted, their Lasguns certainly are big enough. Nobody should have any problem with their use as Scion stand-ins.

No problem for me. Only true difference for WYSIWYG is the hotshot and, honestly, who cares? Hotshot isnt something your opponen must study which model has and which hasnt.
And the rest? Wrap it into fluffy fluff and have Vostroyan Scions

Glad to hear the general consensus is at least positive towards the idea so far.

The only thing I'll have to avoid is using the Hotshot Volleygun as I don't have a way to adequately represent the weapon on the models. That doesn't bother me either to be sure. As I alluded to in my opening post, the Lasrifles (and other infantry portable weapons) that Vostroyan Firstborn carry are renowned as being some of the highest quality and most finely crafted infantry weapons in all of the Imperial Guard. I feel like for WYSIWYG purposes, they are more than sufficient to represent Hot-Shot lasguns.

At current, with the models I have painted, I could easily field a large contingent of counts-as "Scions" from Vostroya.

Militarium Tempestus Command Squad: 150 Points
1x Tempestus Prime: Plasma Pistol, CCW
1x Scion w/ Vox Caster, CCW & Hot-Shot Lasgun
1x Scion w/ Medipack, CCW & Hot-Shot Lasgun
2x Scions w/ Plasma Guns & CCWs
-Squad Wide Carapace Armor, Frag & Krak Grenades

Militarium Tempestus Scions: 155 Points.
1x Tempestor w/ Hot-Shot Las-pistol & CCW
1x Scion w/ Hot-Shot Lasgun, CCW & Voxcaster
6x Scions w/ Hot-Shot Lasguns & CCWs
2x Scions w/ Meltaguns & CCWs
-Squad Wide Carapace Armor, Frag & Krak Grenades

Militarium Tempestus Scions: 145 Points.
1x Tempestor w/ Hot-Shot Laspistol, CCW
1x Scion w/ Hot-Shot Lasgun, CCW & Voxcaster
6x Scions w/ Hot-Shot Lasguns & CCWs
2x Scions w/ Flamers & CCWs
-Squad Wide Carapace Armor, Frag & Krak Grenades

Militarium Tempestus Scions: 155 Points.
1x Tempestor w/ Hot-Shot Laspistol & CCW
1x Scion w/ Hot-Shot Lasgun, CCW & Voxcaster
6x Scions w/ Hot-Shot Lasguns & CCWs
2x Scions w/ Meltaguns & CCWs
-Squad Wide Carapace Armor, Frag & Krak Grenades

All I need to paint is one additional Vostroyan model with a meltagun I've converted but haven't painted, and one Medic model. Beyond that I've got that entire force fully painted and based. That's 35 Deep Striking models for about 605 points and using up one(!) elite choice.

I could shave the flamer squad out and that drops it to 560 points for 25 deep striking troopers with AP:3, AP:2, or AP:1 weapons who can benefit from the FRFSRF order apparently. Buh.

Looks like a fun way to play my Vostroyans May give this a try as an allied force to my standard I.G. Army. Field an HQ and a couple of Veteran squads as troops with supporting Armor behind an ADL. (Chimeras, Leman Russes, Artillery, and maybe a Vendetta or two, etc.)

May just try this out next time I get a game in.

Thanks for the feedback guys . I'll let y'all know how it goes if I try tp play the army this way.

Take it easy for now.

I think it would be fine, their look of the French grenadiers of the imperial guard is a good one for elite troops. One change I would probably recommend is converting the guns. You could easily lop off the barrels (as SlavetoDorkness has done on his excellent conversion) and put on the heat-sleeve barrel from hot-shot lasguns, either bought as bitz from the new kit, or converted from a bit of rod. Then if you want to go one further, there are hotshot cell backpacks available in the new kits, or a variety of bits could be used to make them - I use cut down voxcaster packs on my special weapons carriers - and it is quite simple to connect them to the magazine housing of the lasgun with wire or guitar string.

They would fit perfectly. Just make sure you do keep the hats. A Vostroyan without shapka is no Vostroyan.

I always thought the vostroyans were the perfect fit for stormtroopers/veterans in a Valhallan army due to how ornate they are. I use some of them for my inquisitor's retinue because of that. So I for one would see no problem, they have the same ornate feel about them that sets them apart from normal guard. It does the models more justice than being used as "simple" guardsmen Besides, if you say beforehand there's very little room for confusion as the entire army when it comes to wysiwyg I would think.

Gathering the Informations.

As long as you don't try to field them as both Scions and regular Guardsmen, it's not an issue.

Yea, I wouldn't field vostroyans as Scion stand-ins and field other vostroyans as regular guardsmen. I'd field two squads of veterans with Lascannon HWTs as troops choices with an HQ (CCS) and supporting elements such as armor & ADL.

That way all the guardsmen models would have the same stat line (buying both veteran squads the grenadiers doctrine to have the same armor save as well of course). The only difference is the veterans have standard lasguns, but if I denote which squads are whitch I don't see an issue.

That said, we'll see what we can see on other rules for the list in this 'storm trooper' codex. If I can field an entire force of just storm troopers, I'll do that for gits and shiggles. Also for variety.

Thanks for the thoughts guys. Take it easy for now.

They look nice, top quality conversation concept.

though I don't,t like look off the tank they have designwd, seems bit too much like a mrap they copied and gothiced up and looks bit less than scary or practical.

Maybe you can do something about that too .:-)

I wouldn't field them with a Tarox, deep striking them is the way to go for me.

I'll try and get a full list put together shortly. Will update with how it looks shortly once I can put pen to paper so to speak.
