Subject: Knights - Complement or Contradict your force?
|
 |
Ancient Ultramarine Venerable Dreadnought

I have broke my duck and bought my first new model in a few years, I figure one cant hurt...
Anyway, I have been pouring over the codex and I genuinely cant decide, do you think a Knight should compliment or contradict the paint scheme of your army?
Fluff aside (because I am presuming its very unlikely that a house Terryn knight would usually happen to be helping the UM, a Griffith for the WS, a Hawkshroud for the IF etc) do you think that the model such match or contradict your army?
I was leaning towards painting it up Terryn to match my Ultramarines, and GW have clearly done it on purpose because all of the main legions seem to have Knightly houses that would perfectly match them, but I was getting dress to go to the pub last night, and as I was selecting a pair of shoes, I figured it would look like I got dressed in the dark if my footwear was the same color as my jeans and my shirt... so perhaps it would look more neat and pleasing if it was a contradiction, such as a Blue and Gold Knight for Salamanders, or a deep green Knight for the Ultramarines or what have you.
So what do you lot think, should your knight closely match your army, or would it look cooler being a nice contrast?

They are a separate force and have the ethos of being their own family "Knights" so I would paint them in individual heraldic colours with banners and so on.

They are separate from any current army, although I do incorporate my SM chapter symbols and color into the Knight scheme. In my own fluff, the Knights have become bound to my Chapter. They're not crewed my Marines or chapter serfs, however and the Knight House is mostly autonomous except for military decisions such as deployment and target assignments.

I think they're best left separate, but if you've used any campaign markings or symbols on your SM, then you could transfer those over to the Knight.

Don't paint myself, but in one of the WDs they painted one to match the army's spot colour which I thought worked pretty well.

If you want to paint them more towards the fluff and are concerned how they would contrast against your existing army, work to ensure you complete the base so it will match your existing models. This will help tie them together even though they have different paint schemes.

Anyway, I'd suggest going for a complementary colour, the direct opposite on the colour wheel. In the case of ultramarines, orange.

I am having two painted:
One is part of a Crusade force repaying a debt to the Sororitas and will have related markings / colour scheme to honour them in battle.
The other is a freeblade heavily based on Natasha Keresnky's Battlemech and so has no markings that link to units.............

I'm painting mine specifically to work with my IG paint scheme and I've got fluff to work along with that. But also, since my IG work with a detachment of Knights of Blood on occassion, the Knight will have a symbol or two specifically denoting it's dedication to both forces.
I think there are enough banners and such to adequately show the Knight's dedication to the IG force while giving a 'nod' to the KoB's.
So to answer the question I suppose it matters what you want to do. I really like the Freeblade ideas with their own sort of heraldry, but as I'm a painter of rank and file generally, I like the uniform paint jobs as well.

Yeah this is what I cant really decide upon, like I suppose a compliment would look awesome, but at the same time, like Frankenberry said, there is a certain appeal to uniformity with military formations, and a house Tarryn Knight perfectly suits the UM....
Maybe Ill toss a coin.

As for Knights I would go for a separate scheme, you wouldn't paint Guard allies as ultramarines now would you.
In all situations I would goes for a brown shoe by the way. It strikes the best balance between fashion and not being able to see if someone yaks on yer wheels.

Just be sure to paint a large target on it to guide my Dark Lance and Lascannon shots and everything should be fine. Thank you for being considerate to my armies. I have been struggling with this problem myself regarding the Knight I plan to ally with my Guard army. I have been leaning towards a custom Freeblade color scheme (tip of the hat to Mr Morden as I'll also be using a Battletech influenced color scheme) and have settled on a quartered color scheme that will use one of the colors of my Guard army, but the majority of colors used on the Knight will clash with my Guard . I figure if one color can be used to tie the two armies together that is a decent compromise.

Haha, I never yak! And don't mention the government, I'm literally not allowed to even mention anything other than wargaming now lest I am unceremoniously barred.... even If I dont actually argue with anybody. Such is the fury of my tongue!
Anyway you are missing my point about painting the guard up as ultramarine's, obviously I wouldn't make an Imperial Fists or an Ultramarine Knight because they aren't in the fluff, I'm saying GW have done it on purpose so you can have fluff friendly Kinghlty houses that match your SM army almost perfectly, you know... like there is a big yellow house, and a big green house, and a big blue and gold house, so clearly they intended to give people the option of having a Knight match their army but it still be fluff friendly.
I have been puring over the companion though and I think ill go with an opposite, I like that big fether with a spider sprayed across its back.

Your dark lances dont need a hand anyway! I reckon the quartered color scheme is a great idea as well, that sounds like an excellent way to go. I think I might get my sketchbook out and play with a few color schemes before I start painting and do something I regret.
I watched Total Recall again recently, remember the scene where the receptionist chick is doing her nails with that insta-nail pen thing? I would love one of those for coloring my Knight in!

Ive also got an Ultramarines arm, and I've decided to paint three knights. The first two will be from House Hawkshroud (yellow) but with UM markings as that house puts the markings of their allies on their machines to show support. The third will be the arachnid free blade, who was supposedly at the battle for Macragge. None of my knights will be blue, but I think that will look better on the table.

Yeah I think Im going to go for something different, I would like to see them alongside a Terryn Knight though, they are almost identically colored with the deep blue/gold trim.

The knights have the same colours as space marine legions not as colour-coordinated accessories, but because primary colours are easy to identify, contrast and the paints are ready off the shelf.
Blue marines, red marines, yellow marines. Funny how the biggest sections are the primary colours. Painting highlights or shadows on white or yellow is difficult of course, but everyone has the option to go smurf or vampire marine! ;-]
