So I'm looking at effective builds with the new Tyranid dataslates available, and I think this one should be fun:

Swarmlord
2 Tyrant Guard

2 venomthropes

(endless swarm formation)
3 Tyranid Warriors w/ devourers
3 x 10 hormagaunts
3 x 10 termagants

(subterranean formation)
Trygon Prime
Trygon
Mawloc
3 x 3 raveners (7 devourers total)

2 x carnifexes w/ 2 TL devourers

So the list starts with 13 units on the board, including 3 monstrous creatures. They're the anvil moving in the bubble of the Swarmlord's 24" synapse. The venomthropes are in 2 units to spread cover for the first 1-2 turns until they're vaporized. The anvil moves up-field to threaten the assault, while the warriors hide in the backfield with a unit or 2 of termagants for OBJ love. On turn 2 (2+ for the whole formation) the trygon with his 3 ravener brood buddies pops up (no scatter on the reveners!) to hammer an enemy static position with S4 and S5 fire and threaten the next turn assault. Additionally, the mawloc can do his thing on any appropriate units as necessary. The 2nd Trygon is just icing on the cake - he can DS wherever necessary and create a 2nd hole to bring in regenerated gaunts. The endless swarm ensures more gaunts are available to deal with outflankers or deepstrikers.

The list has weaknesses - it relies on TL devourers and massed small arms fire for anti-flyer defense, and it's got nothing to deal with AV 14 at range. It does however have 6 monstrous creatures (3 that will DS in) to deal with, plenty of SITW, and a whole mess of gaunts.

Thoughts?

I don't have my codex with me so could be wrong here but I can't see the 2 troops choices you need in the standard FOC for the list to be legal.

I take it this isn't for tournament play as most seem to be limiting you to one formation in place of an ally FOC?

Should be fun to play though.

Interesting point. I hadn't thought about including 2 troops choices outside the formations. I think you're right and it's illegal.

I'll have to re-look it.

I was going to say the same The cheapist possible would be Swarms of rippers...39 per? Though I'd want some actually useful troops

Hmm. I think I'll either have to lose the endless swarm, drop a carnifex, or downgrade the swarmlord to a tyrant on foot. I'll have to fiddle with the numbers to see what looks like it'll work.
