Hi all, I'm trying to paint some gold trim for my House Terryn Knights but I'm having some difficulties. I'm using Gehenna Gold as recommended in the GW paint guide, but it is not covering nearly as well as I'd like. I've gone over the trim with three thinned coats and you can still see some black underneath. If I leave the paint thick it streaks. Any pointers on how to get better gold coverage? If I have to do 5+ coats I'm gonna go crazy!

I put down a layer of gold mixed with dark brown first-I use Scorched Brown, not sure what the equivalent in the new paint range is. That has a good coverage and then you can paint pure gold over the top. Make sure you're shaking the gold paint before opening, too, as sometimes it can settle. Hope this helps!

Rhinox Hide would be the equivalent to Scorched Brown.

It covers just as nicely as Scorched Brown did, to boot.

Ok awesome. I'll give that a try. Any other tips?

Don't try to force it all in one go. Take your time and do light coats gradually.

For gold, you MUST MUST MUST base coat with another metal base paint. In this case you want Balthasaar Gold http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat800002a&prodId=prod1500058a

It looks bronze, but covers the black very well and is perfect for being the base coat under gold. From there you can do Gehenna Gold. Gehenna simple doesn't cover anything solidly, it truly is a layer paint. I've had plenty of practice on this with Blood Angels and their fascination for gold, as well as Sanguinary Guard.

Also, I've never had luck thinning the metals. I always use straight up, and just make sure I'm applying small amounts.

For any areas that I need to paint Gold, I always put one coat of a brown (normally Mournfang for me but Rhinox Hide will be perfect as well) on all the areas I want Gold and then paint the Gehenna's on top of the brown coat. Works well for me, Gold can be a pain to work with though!

on the forum. Obviously

Yeah, gold is a tricky color. Like most light color paints, it tends to have difficulty covering black.

I usually use a brown coat before applying gold.

I can't say I've painted much with the GW golds, but I do have my own preference here: artist-grade acryllics. Golden makes some really awesome fine-grained metallics that cover quite well. My usual fallback was Golden's Deep Gold (fine) with a drybrush of Interference Gold, a translucent/transparent gold that, when handled carefully and properly, can bring a subtle gold sheen to just about anything, when the light hits it just right. Truly awesome stuff.

That said, if you're having trouble, start with a darker, better-covering metallic, I liked my Tin Bitz back in the day, but even just building up a bit of brown first works nicely... and seconded on the mixing tip: shake it until you think it's been shaken enough, then keep going for another few minutes. Good metallic paints will use fine metal or mica flakes to give that irridescent shine, so make sure everything is thoroughly mixed before you hit brush to pot.

Things I've gotten other players to admit...

You could also use the brass base paint. It covers black very well and gives a good base color for the gold.

One layer of gehenna, wash with sepia, reapply gehenna on main parts for full coverage, 50/50 gehenna/runfang for coverage, works perfectlty on my pre heresy EC.

Balthasar Gold goes over black just fine in one coat. I do that, then Gehenna's Gold, then washes and highlights afterwards.
