I've been having some difficulty taking down flyers so I decided to take a mortis dreadnought with 2 TL lascannons.
for the model, i'm not sure if I should buy a mortis lascannon arm and put it onto one of my spare dreadnoughts, or if I should get a contemptor and 2 lascannon arms as I do like to have flashy forgeworld models

If I get the second arm, I could get it up and running within a week, but if I get the contemptor, not only will it look better on the table, but will get a lot more bonuses rule wise. However, the contemptor will take me a lot longer to gather the cash for / build / paint.

thanks for the help

I'd look into the mortis pattern contemptor, with the Kheres Pattern Assault Cannons you can kick out 12 S6 rending shots at 24" plus you get front armour 13 and a 5++ and thats before you give him a missile rack

The contemptor is a nice model as long as you get the lower legs the right way around (I nearly didn't and my friend who helped me build mine still got his wrong).

Extra armour on the front is nice and str 7 is nice if you need to melee.

I'd take one for my SW if I could but it's not in the rules sadly.

Even if you're running it as a regular Dreadnought, I'd go for the Contemptor. Sure, it may take longer to get, and it will be more expensive. But those things are gorgeous! It should definitely be worth the money, methinks.

What do you call a lasgun with a laser sight? Twin-linked.

Space wolves have their own contemptor, its in the most recent Apocalypse book.

Someone at my FLGS made a mortis by taking a regular dreadnought (well, I think it was made with venerable bitz) and then sprucing it way the hell up with a bunch of DA bitz. It looked pretty good, actually.

And that's the direction I'd recommend. If you really like the look of the contemptor, then I guess it might be worth saving up for, but you'd have to like the look an awful lot more than the regular dread to pay those kinds of prices for it.

Personally, I like the look of the contemptors LESS than the regular dreadnoughts, so I'd go with a converted regular dread rather than buying forgeworld.

The mortis dread (non-contemptor) is such a bargain in the latest Imperial Armour book. Roughly the same cost as the codex marine version but get sky fire and interceptor if it doesn't move. Why would you NOT take the IA mortis dread?

As someone who owns two mortis contemptors, I will tell you now that they are not as awesome as they used to be. The had a 20 point increase in price, as well as a reduction of 1 from their BS. Overall, now it is just ok, but expensive.

If you are looking for anti air, then I would certainly go with the normal mortis with lascannons. The contemptor suffers from a schizo job role. Should it be moving forward to get in range of the assault cannons, or should it stand still and actually provide the anti air it is supposed to.

Lascannons are awesome on anti air mounts, due to the ability to better deal with heldrakes or things like the caestus assault ram.

But could I get a contemptor and use the rules for a standard dread?

That's my plan. I do quite like the Contemptor Dreadnought, but i can't justify the expense. I'd rather take my Dark Angel bits and make a venerable look unique.

They don't get mortis patterns though which is the subject of the thread.
