I wasn't sure exactly where to put this thread, if it belongs somewhere more appropriate maybe someone can move it.
So my dad is starting our favourite hobby and already has a load of Necrons. I've never taught anyone the hobby from fresh before, and I am especially keep to get help on specifically Necrons.
I'll be playing Space Wolves (to get a kind of retro-broken codex battle lol) and I know generally what will be easiest to start with. No vehicles, a few different unit types like the TWC (not completely optimised since they can easily make a game boring for an opponent if the rolls go slightly well), a few long fangs.
I'm wondering what to put in a 500pt list for Necrons, I was thinking a few different troop units and some Wraiths and again no vehicles, but other than that I'm not familiar enough with Necrons to know what will be a good way to learn them. Keeping all their rules as simple as possible while introducing a variety of units and weapons/saves/abilities etc.
Any suggestions (including a good example list) are much appreciated!!

Why no vehicles?
The majority of Necron lists at any level will have Annihilation Barges (as they are one of the killiest units we have), so if you want a 500 point list WITHOUT one, well, it might end up not being very good.
Your main problem will be mobility, so you could consider something like the following- + HQ + (160pts)
* Vargard Obyron (160pts)
+ Troops + (201pts)
* 8x Necron Immortals (gauss) (136pts)
* 5x Necron Warriors (65pts)
+ Fast Attack + (140pts)
* 4x Canoptek Scarabs (60pts)
* 4x Tomb Blades (80pts)
Thanks to Obyron, it has relatively tough mobile scoring, very fast harassment units, and some minor tarpitting.
Another variation you could run would be replacing Obyron with a Destroyer Lord, and all of the Scarabs and Tomb Blades with Wraiths. Very killy, but no way to move your troops.

Good point, I don't suppose vehicles make it that much harder to learn.... I like your list, it includes pretty much the main bulk of his collection so far! Thanks for that.
Out of interest then, what would you suggest as a learner 500pt list including vehicles?

at 500 points probably just 1 or 2 Annihilation Barge(s)

A single Annihilation Barge should be fine for 500.
Add a second one when you go up to 750-1000, then consider a third for 1250+.
(usually the bare minimum will be two, they're just too good not to take).
I took a 500 list like this and it did pretty well- + HQ + (140pts)
* Destroyer Lord (Warscythe, Sempiternal Weave) (140pts)
+ Troops + (150pts)
* 5x Necron Immortals (Tesla) (85pts)
* 5x Necron Warriors (65pts)
+ Fast Attack + (115pts)
* 3x Canoptek Wraiths (1x Whip Coils) (115pts)
+ Heavy Support + (90pts)
* Annihilation Barge (90pts)
Though honestly, if you just take that first list I posted and replace the Tomb Blades and a single Immortal with an Annihilation Barge, it should work out pretty nicely.

I'd take:
Lord
Night Scythe w/ 5 War
5 War
2 Anni Barges
for 500pts

Ive always pondered the idea to try out some tomb blades, but just never really been able to make them fit with my list.
Have you used them much? If so what was your overall experience with them? Which loadout did you use?

I don't think this is for any kind of competitive army, or anything just teaching someone to play the game ad have friendly games.
Play with a Destroy Lord
2 Squads of Immortals
Wha'ts left over put in some wraiths

Tomb Blades are actually pretty great, but it's just that they compete with some of the best other units in the codex for the FA slot.
In low point games, however, they really shine.
For 3 points more than an Immortal you get:
• T5 with 3+ saves AND jink saves
• twin linked Tesla (and Tesla LOVES to be twin linked)
• extreme movement (perfect for late game contesting on objectives your opponent is trying to claim)
• hammer of wrath (if you need it in an emergency)
You normally only take them bare bones with Tesla, or with Scopes and Beamers for semi accurate blast weaponry.

Good info thanks for the post. Yeah I might proxy some in my next friendly just to try them out. I am not going to lie the idea of 10-15 of them running around shooting blast templates sounds awsome and hilarious.

Well if we're throwing up fun 500 point lists:
Szeras
5 Deathmarks
5 Warriors
5 Warriors
Doomscythe

Why Szeras? You just wanting an HQ that has Str8 weapon?
Id personally rather have a Overlord with a res orb and a blob of warriors with some barge and/or wraith support. Most 500 pt lists couldnt handle 15-20 warriors getting back up on a 4+.

I chose Szeras because a) with everything else in the list I have, a lord with a res orb is too expensive, b) the buff to one unit of warriors can come quite in handy (BS5 making them a bit more killy, T5 making them a bit tougher, or the S5 being pretty much worthless) c) gaze of flame, d) YES I WANT MY 36" S8 AP1 SHOT! MOAR DAKKA DAKKA!!!!
And a Doomscythe is usually more than other 500 pt lists can handle.
