Hello Dakka, I need some help with a list for my current FLGS's league. I won my first game by a large margin and nearly got swept my second game. I still have a chance to win the league as long as I do really well my next 4 games in the 6 game slate. I have no idea what I will be facing but this league has a little bit of everything so I really need an all-comers list. Most of the games we play will be extremely objective based as well as using the Swedish Komp league rules found here http://www.gameempire.com/forum/index.php?/topic/6464-2000pt-komp-0-1-single-codex-league/. I am only allowed one komp point, however I really want to use a list with 0 komp points to maximise points.

My list is a standard Ultramarines Tac Squad list which focuses on Marneus Calgar and the survability of tons of 3+ save bodies. I want a very passive objective based shooty list. I also am fairly new to the hobby (3 months in) so my model range is a bit limited. I will post a list of units I DON'T have so you can help me build my list accordingly. I would prefer to keep the list as WYSIWYG as possible however my league should allow me small proxies (melta guns are actually grav-guns, and so on).

Stuff I don't have:

Most named Ultramarines characters, with the exception of Tigurius and Calgar.
A techmarine
Scout Squads of any kind
7 or more tactical squad marines
4 or more rhinos
8 or more drop pods
razorbacks
Assault Centurions
Regular Bike troops of any kind
Land speeders
more then 1 stormtalon
A storm raven
non-predator or vindicator rhino chassis vehicles
more then 2 land raiders
a thunderfire cannon (I know I really need one)

My actual list

HQ Marneus Calgar 285

Troops: 10 man tactical combi-plasma/plasma gun, rhino 205
10 man tactical combi-plasma/plasma gun, rhino 205
10 man tactical flamer/plasma pistol rhino 195
10 man tactical combi-melta/melta drop pod 190
10 man tactical combi-melta/melta drop pod 190

Elites: 10 man sternguard drop pod 265
duo twin-linked autocannon dreadnought 120

Heavy Support: 10 man devastator squad 4x lascannon 220

Fast Attack: Stormtalon w/skyhammer missiles 125

Calgar goes with the lascannon squad which usually moves into a better position after popping a devastator doctrine (or two) so he can tank hits, stay safe, and charge incoming fast beasty assault types. The rest of the squad simply forms a tac marine gunline around objectives with the sternguard either taking out key units, being a distraction, or holding a key vital area. I generally don't sacrifice them off unless I feel like they can grab their point value. Obviously the goal around this list is to move up, survive, grab some crazy force multiplication out of the doctrines and keep the objectives. I love to combat squad the melta tac squads and leave the meltas in the drop pods and line up the generic bolter marines in front of rhinos or the dreadnought for some cheap cover. I don't care what anyone says rhinos are worth their point cost, and their survivability doesn't matter since most armies can get first blood against any army with any army anyways.

Any advice? I can run pretty much any other lists, and am really looking to not drop calgar. However if anyone could suggest better things instead of him I'm all ears.

If you want to play Calgar you should play to his strengths which are run lots of Tac marines to benifit from chapter tactics, honor guard squads and get him in cc.

I would say find a way to get Calgar and some HG in a DP and maybe add a prescience inquisitor with the Devs.

Consider getting another Stormtalon. Like everything in 40k more is better and for the price they are very good.

Have you thought about taking a null-deploy list? What about 7 pods and a stormtalon? Also, if Calgar goes in a pod, and your tac squads come out twin-linked thanks to the doctrine, I think his orbital bombardment would be twin linked too that turn. Just a thought.

Other than something like that, I like the idea of the devastators stepping up into range or cover, but I think the best way to take advantage of this is to hide 2 small squads of 5 of them turn 1 behind a building wall or something, then use that to move them all out into visibility and open-up.

Oh, and all the podding in tac marines should have melta bombs in case they get charged by a monstrous creature.

Looks fun though!

Running 60 marines in 6 drop pods, all tact squads have melta combi melta, take devs with plasma cannons, papa calgar comes in 7th pod with sternguard who have either combi plasma or melta, pretty much kill all tanks turn one, and after that kill anything with a T value.

All of you obviously did not look at the rules for the Swedish komp league I'm in. Two of those suggestions are illegal and all of them require me to take at least one komp point. Honor guard are not great with calgar, he does excel with lots of tactical marines and I could run more then 5 squads (which is honestly a lot already) but I wouldn't have anything else to put them in other then drop pods. Is running 4 drop pods and putting tw sternguard in rhinos really worth it?
