Hello everyone! I'm a seasoned player and leader of a gaming group out of Boston MA. This is my first foray into DakkaDakka but I have known of the community for some time now. The reason I signed up is actually an interesting story.

Without delving too deep into it here, I found out a new face in my gaming group had an account here and was using it to be somewhat less than sporting in regards to his own performance in the competitive scene. As a result I spent a lot of time on the forum, seeing both that account's behavior and how the forum addressed it, and decided to sign up and check things out for myself.

I've been playing since around 2007, and am the last remaining founder of our gaming group. It's a small group but we operate under the principles of sporting play, and embracing the game as it grows and changes.

I'm looking forward to talking shop in regards to getting my Space Wolves into a more effective build than they have been in recent months. Glad to be here!

I had a quick read of the post over on evildice. I feel your pain it seems no matter what hobby/sport/interests you have they're always going to be people who make everyone else's time a little less fun.

Glad to see its sorted and hope you enjoy your time on Dakkadakka!

I am indeed the one who wrote that story out. It was an unfortunate situation all around and I think that we lost what could have been a good addition. Additionally, I am unsurprised that he was the first person to respond to this thread...However it was because of that situation that I ended up reading through these boards quite a lot and it seems there are some good discussions going on here, which made me decide to sign up.

I spent a lot of time on Warseer for years before their awkward "one and done" ban policy caught me in a sweep and sent me packing even though I was by and large a good user over there. I get the sense things are different here than on Warseer, though. At any rate it would be a disservice to my club if I didn't at least make an effort to see what else is out there and how others approach the game.

I was very surprised when the Evil Dice thread made it here, honestly. That's one of the dirtier bits of business I've engaged in since founding that club with several close friends in 2009. But I had to ask myself, if a person disregarded me enough to say such things to me despite being a club leader, what would they do to the players? I have some younger guys there to think about, not to mention newer guys, and I just didn't want to see that situation grow any further and chance others being taken advantage of. I don't know enough about the Dakka community to know if those actions are going to put me in a bad spot or not but hopefully people will understand why I did what I did from that story I posted elsewhere.

As a club leader I am always interested in how people run events and the various nuances to campaigns and tournament setups, this is something I'm hoping I can get a lot of information on reading through here as Dakka is more topically expansive than Warseer. I am always trying to come up with alternative ways of doing things to shift paradigms and it will be a good opportunity to toss some ideas around here, I think.

Welcome to Dakka

It is surprising that people will act like as you have said, I have played competitively a few times before and got 3rd as my highest score, but I never looked for every advantage, just focused on what my army did..

I don't have any issues with competitive-minded play, and thankfully I don't like to paint groups in a broad stroke. 40k is a great game and there are many ways to enjoy it -- as I'm fond of saying, none of them are really "wrong." However once things become detrimental to others, things change quickly.

So far I've been really excited by the forum, however. There is a lot of really good discussion here. As a person who loses a lot of hobby time to the running of the group, I find myself often answering people's questions but having few people to direct my own to, so I'm hoping that there will be a lot to pick up on here (and so far there has been).

Guy you described sounds like a sphincter located at the end of the alimentary canal (mwhahaha, take that swear filter).

Also, I know all the little things could be overlooked, but as you said there was a pattern of behaviour and you picked up on it. I can understand that as the leader of a group that is loathe to use the veto power you restrained yourself numerous times, but in this case I believe you were perfectly within your rights to say something to him directly, and at the time. I've seen a lot of passive aggressive managers, it seems like your the opposite (perhaps even too much so, given how much he got away with - kudos to your tourney's no# 2 player, he must have a lot of restraint). Still, it just shows you and your group a stand-up people slow to anger, thanks for posting your story and welcome to dakka!
