A few questions regarding centurions and split fire

1. The Omniscope is purchased by the sergeant. Can any model in the unit split fire or is it only the sergeant?

2. If the above answer is any model can use the split fire rule, can you split fire multiple models in the squad? IE target 3 units?

3. If and IC joins the unit can he also split fire?

4. How is split fire vs regular fire armor saves resolved from the unit? IE can you chose to fire at a target with 1 centurion to see if it dies and then if successful then choose to split fire at another target unit? Or must you announce split fire targets and regular fire targets before any dice are rolled?

5. Finally is Power of Machine Spirit target resolution done exactly like split fire? IE can you choose targets as you are shooting the weapons and seeing the wounds resolved, or do you need to announce all weapon targets and then start rolling dice?

Thanks for all the help!

1) the split fire rule states this clearly

1) Any one model

2) Only one model

3) The IC is a member of the unit for all purposes.

4) Resolve the Split Fire shot(s) first, then declare second target (which explicitly must be a different target to the first). Note that the FAQ clarifies that you may not Split Fire to destroy a transport and then shoot the contents with the rest of the unit.

5) Split Fire is an exception to the normal targeting rules - PotMS does not have the same allowance and must declare all targets before dice are rolled.

Vanished Completely

I always found Split Fire to be quite a puzzle.

There is at least two other rules that do something similar, one that comes to mind quickly is Target Locks for Tau. The other Rules all inform us that model X or model Y can nominate a different target then the rest of the unit. The rest of the sequence remains unchanged and it all works so easily and fluently. Split Fire, on the other hand, instead allows us to resolve the entire shooting attack for a single model before returning to the start of the sequence. This effectively allows the second unit to target a different unit, it reaches the nominate a target section separate to the first model, but is just... such a round about way to do the same thing!

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

There is huge difference between split fire and a target lock though.

Every model with a target lock gets to choose a different target, while split fire only ever allows 1 model to shoot at a different target.

YMDC has plenty of room for discussion veering away from the RAW, particularly in cases like this where what is being put forward as the RAW is absurd.
