Hi people,

I'm a 40K player, having returned to 6th after quitting sometime shortly after 3rd dropped. At the time I was also a fanatical WHFB player, only really picking up 40K back then because my friends did and I didn't want to be left out. Well, here I am a decade and a half later enjoying 40K again, but also gazing longingly over at the greener pastures that you all seem to enjoy.

So this isn't another "Pick my army for me" thread, or "Which faction has cannons" thread. I am adamant I will return to my roots, leading the flower of Bretonnia. A couple of questions though which you might be able to help me with.

Firstly, it seems the battalion is an ideal place to start, and I was considering picking up 3 of these. I've read around the internet and a lot of people are being told to pick up 2, and an extra peg knight to make that unit legal, any reason _not_ to just get 3 battalions? The way I see it it's 24 knights (combo errant/realm) all the M@A I'll need for the foreseeable future, and a bunch of those swanky longbowmen. On top of that the peg knights will be a legal unit. This setup also seems to be the core of most Bretonnian armies I've seen - I have been following thesustainablecentre and oncebitten360 on youtube for some time now, both of these guys go into detail as to why they build the way they do and I have learned quite a bit from them.

Secondly, rumors abound of a potential "Squatting" of the faction. I don't normally buy into most internet noise but when we're talking a considerable investment of $500 just on Battalions I'd like to assuage my fears a little. I see The Empire has elite knights now (well, another elite one that seems better than what Bretonnia can take), and even the High Elves can source heavy cavalry from their core choices, this against a backdrop of "it's a bad edition for cavalry" has me a little hesitant to take the plunge. Again, the internet rumor machine also hints at a new book in the pipeline, but again... rumors... the internet...

Help me dakka WHFB community... You're my only hope.

I'm afraid you've already found the full spectrum of the knowledge we have. I'd say the new Army Book-rumours seem to have a little more meat on their bones, while the Squat-rumours seems more like something disillusioned people have come up with (as GW would certainly not come out and say it was getting squatted.)

With GW being the absolute kings of sticking to the 1960 business model of complete secrecy (the whole year 2000 transparent business model is about as far away from GW as you can get) I'm afraid no one can give you anything but their opinion.

With how they have been adding new Codex and types of Codex into 40k, I have serious doubts they would squat an existing army from WHFB though. Especially one as flavourful as brettonia. I think a large scale model rework is more likely.

Wait a while man, I'll be keen to join you with some fantasy models, but I'm still going round in circles with who to take. Daemon-tree wood elves is tempting, hordes of rats Skaven calls me too, but I just don't know. Let's see if you do get a new book and edition soon and then we can dive in together!
