Hey guys, I'll start off for thanking you all for any feedback you might give. Trying to figure out a fairly decent TAC list at 1500 is a pain in the neck, and hopefully I did a fairly decent job of it.

HQ:

Tigurius - 165

Command Squad: 5x Melta Guns, Drop Pod - 185

Troops:

Tactical Squad: Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon, Rhino, Sgt w/ Combi-Plasma. - 215

Tactical Squad: Plasma Gun, Plasma Cannon, Rhino, Sgt w/ Combi-Plasma. - 215

Scout Squad: Telion, 7 Strong (including Telion), Sniper Rifles, Camo Cloaks. - 145

Elites:

Mortis-Pattern Contemptor - 2x Kheres Assault Cannon, Cyclone Missile Launcher - 235

Heavy Support:

Devastators - 4x Lascannon - 150

Thunderfire Cannon - 100

Fortification:

Aegis Defense Line - Icarus Lascannon - 85

- 1495 -

The price increase on the Mortis made me sad inside. This year has been pretty harsh to the Contemptor Mortis, first losing it's BS5 and now going up in price by twenty points. Not even the normal Contemptor remained unnerfed, as their CMLs went back to 35pts. Combined with it's Skyfire/Interceptor that only allows you to intercept if you go first, I'm finding it harder to justify bringing it in my army. Which is sad, because I absolutely love the model... but now I can't help but ask if two Stormtalons wouldn't do it's job just as well. Or even a trio of Speeders with CMLs and HBs. Or 3 Grav Cents w/ Hurricane bolters...

The Scout Squad used to be a 8man strong Tactical Squad in a Rhino w/ Melta and a Combi Melta. Now, however, having a 5man squad in a Rhino barreling across the field is just asking to give up two kill points, especially when I already have a podding Melta Squad to potentially do that for me. The scouts are something I don't usually bring in my armies, despite having painted them with a bit more love then I usually give my bog-standard troop choices. However, they do fulfill the roll as a decent objective holder (when not faced with Eldar, or being the target of Tau Markerlights). I've also always wanted to try Telion's hand at the Icarus Lascannon, and sniping out annoying special weapons seems like it could be a good time. However, if someone can think of a better troop choice that will fit in this army list for around 150pts, I'm certainly open to it.

Tigurius will, typically, hang out with the Devastators. Granting prescience to the Devs or the Contemptor is generally going to be his main thing, but if the enemy deploys a tank that *has* to die turn one (such as LRC filled with 10 Honor Guard and a Chapter Master, or something equally brutal if it hits my lines), he may make the sacrifice and join with them on their death jump. Activate Storm of Fire, and pray to the Emperor that they roll really badly on their explosion saves.

The Thunderfire Cannon is also a departure for me, as I've typically shied away from it. Mostly because of how annoying it is to build, and the fact that the local GW doesn't carry it on it's shelves has allowed me to resist impulse buying it. However, with the advent of the new Imperial Guard codex and my local area having many of Macragge's favorite bugs (and the Ork codex being rumored to be next!), it seems like a logical choice to pick up one up.

Just note, a Quad guy has higher probability of destroying a flyer, and who's manning it? Haven't used a Morris before bit don't give up hope, they're fun which is what the game is about.

Typically Tigurius is manning the Lascannon in my current lists. The reason I picked Lascannon was to add an extra gun to my Devastator Squad that my HQ (or the Sergeant, if necessary) could man. With the Scouts in the List, Telion might give it a whirl if he finds something that needs to die hidden away in a squad.

The Quadgun does kill flyers a bit more regularly, but the Contemptor Mortis can shoot at them as well. I figured the extra bit of oomph to my Lascannons would be worth it, especially when they are tasked with taking down AV13 vehicles.

Ok first off, I LOVE the contemptor mortis run it anyways and who cares if it is just a bit worst then a couple storm talons. If you are going to run it I suggest taking off the CML, because as i'm reading the book right now it doesn't allow you to fire both it and it's duo assault cannons (despite terminators getting to fire their's) So that can free up 35 points. I think telion should man your ADL he can always precision shot, which is awesome for the quad gun, as well as giving everyone a gnarly cover save behind the line. Also why not put a scoring unit around an objective on your half of the board?

Your tactical marines should not have any heavy weapons because typically you want your tac squads running around the board tarpitting taking objectives and shooting. Plasma cannons can't even snapfire, and I don't think it is worth splitting them into combat squads just to have 5 marines sit on an objective hoping for something to wander into range. That could be another 30 points.

Do you have any other option for tank hunting then the command squad? You may be better off with a few bikes or another devastator squad. Since those squads tend to be longer-lived and have a better chance of gaining their points back.

Also speaking of long-lived devastator squads, if you're gonna put tiggy in the squad too then bump up the marine count. Give him 5 wounds of marines for only 70 more points.

Walkers can fire all of their weapons on the move, so the CML may fire with the paired Kheres Assault Cannons.

Telion will typically be on the home objective with his Scout Squad. Or infiltrating forward to take a mid field objective if it is in an advantageous position. If he mans the Icarus Lascannon, it will be to snipe out Power Klaw nobs/Plasma Gunners/Grav Gunners.

I considered dropping my Plasma Cannons for no heavy weapons, but, on objective games, I'd rather have some form of fire support coming from the back line objective holders rather than moving forward. In most objective games, I can have up to 3 Objectives in my own deployment zone. If they aren't even holding a Plasma Cannon or Missile Launcher, there's five models now sitting around and doing nothing.

The Command Squad is my main answer to large enemy tanks. It's cheaper than a Sternguard drop and the meltas are permanent, and with decent positioning they have a fairly decent chance of lasting through one turn.

And the ablative marines in the Devastator Squad just 70 wasted points. They add no firepower to my army and do little else other than catch bullets. While that can be useful, I'd much rather take the 70pts and spend them where they can be used to put more pressure on my opponent.

Unless your battleplan calls for combat squadding the tacs, I’d take something besides the PC. You can’t snap fire it, and your tac squads are generally on the move. Two of our doctrines will lets you re-roll misses with tactical heavy snap-fires (Tac, Dev) but you can’t even shoot with blast weapons. While I can see the point of dropping the heavy on mobile squads, I’m a traditionalist and like to include them. As you say, there are times where it’s nice to have them.

And if we Ultramarines start slacking on fielding things the way they should be, what would the less codex adherent chapters think?

I think the Mortis was a bit overpowered originally. I think the nerfs whacked it from “awesome, a little over the top” to “solid, average power” It’s expensive, but fairly tough, and has some nice rules and a lot of firepower. In smaller lists it is a lot of your eggs in one basket.

Overall I think you have a good list here. No fast attack, but you don’t need them, I just like to see one thing from every slot in a Ultramarine TAC list. It’s a fluffy thing though.

Used to have 7th Company Speeders (orange shoulder pads) backing up my List, but they got dropped in favor of my Command Squad and a few other bits.

I used to take Missile Launchers, but, there are a few Terminator Armies still rolling around my area, and having the AP2 blast is nice to deal with them when they deepstrike. That, and Missile Launchers are kind of mediocre this edition.

And, if he's on the move, he can fire his pistol. Or, if he's in a rhino, he can just pack some extra ice around his plasma cannon.
