Question: Can a unit in a challenge be assaulted by another unit?

Scenario: Opponents Warlord assaulted my Noise Marines, Noise Champ Issues challenge. Noise Marines kill the warlords retinue. Noise Champ and Warlord swing at each other doing nothing. Warlord is only remaining model in unit. My next turn, can my warlord and his unit assault his Warlord? Or are they locked in the challenge?

They can assault, however they only thing they can do is add to the supporting rule that gives you a reroll for every 5 models.

If you had a character in the other unit, they could choose to make a Heroic Intervention.

RAW With challengers only count as being in b2b with each other would another unit be able to complete a charge as they wouldn't count as being B2B because of the challenge.

HIWPI wouldn't care and would let them charge.

They only count as being in a challenge after the charge subphase so it doesn't matter.

Counting as and being in base to base contact are two different things.

The models can assault and be in base to base contact with the challenge and become locked in combat but would still only play as the supporting roll.

Sorry i was mostly putting the RAW as a question if it worked that way, not saying that that was the way it worked. That why i put in my hiwpi but i probably was still unclear.

Technically yes, assault is allowed, but keep in mind, in the above examples if you have too many noise marines they will surround the opponents Warlord, which could potentially prevent you from assaulting with more units, as it would be impossible to meet the 'move into b2b' contact requirement for a successful assault.
