Which takes precedence - independant characters not being able to be targetted unless they are the closest, or shooters being able to ignore stealth suits for the next closest target? If I had to guess fluff-wise, I would say that the independant character could be targetted, but I wanted to clear it with the rules lawyers.

I guess it's a little bit ambiguous in the Stealth field rules, but in my mind "ignore" means "Treat them as though they aren't there."

Somewhere in south-central England.

The rule says you don't need to take a Target Priority test to ignore a stealth unit. That does not remove it from being the closest unit -- it's still there.

You cannot target an IC if it is not the closest unit.

It seems that you can choose to ignore the stealth unit, must ignore the IC, and shoot at the third farthest away target instead.

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Precisely, Killcrazy. A bulletproof deductive argument.  (Assuming your two premises are exactly as the book states them.)

"The last known instance of common sense happened at a GT. A player tried to use the 'common sense' argument vs. Mauleed to justify his turbo-boosted bikes getting a saving throw vs. Psycannons. The player's resulting psychic death scream erased common sense from the minds of 40k players everywhere. " - Ozymandias

Woah.......that never even occurred to me...

So you can ignore the stealth suits to shoot at the next closest unit in los and range that isn't an IC.

Wow. GW games + logic = o_O ???
