I've read what I could in the Codex and Lexicanum and other places and the fluff on these things is very lacking. Basically there is no history except for one or two battles where they played an important part.

Where did they come from? how long have they been around? And anything else?

Here's a gratuitous picture of a ST.

I don't know, but I'm taking this as another reminder that there is still mess loads of story and fluff that NEEDS to be created along with the mile long list of other things Gdubs needs to get crackin' on.

I for one am not a fan of flying things, but that's my $.02.

How else were they going to introduce a new unit? c'mon people...

Not a lot of fluff, but in-universe IIRC they've been around since the heresy.

As for the design, I like it, but it shouldn't be used by Astartes, it just feels too.... "dangerous". Like it could easily be shot down and is simply putting a vary valuable and very expensive asset unnecessary risk. It'd make a much better Imperial Guard unit, especially with a camo paintjob.

Besides, the flying baneblade removes the need for the Storm Talon to even be a thing.

This is the Warhammer 40 universe we're talking about. A simple bolter will have a long and presigious history.

Please think of this as earnest and not curmudgeonly.

The Storm Talon comes from the need to get your money in exchange for a box of plastic sprues. Most of the cool stuff about 40k comes from some people having a dream and hoping it would sell. The Storm Talon happened the other way around, by GW knowing that a box with the word space marine on it would sell, and getting someone to come up with an idea. I just mean that, personally, the existence of the Storm Talon is not at all surprising and it does not seem to matter where it "comes from."

I'm pretty fine with the codex saying that the seventh companies fly them though.

pretty cynical statement there PF. the stormtalon came out right with the shift to 6th edition when fliers where important. to my way of thinking GW wanted to get the flier into the hands of space marines ASAP so that they'd be sure fliers where in the hands of the majority of players reasonably swiftly.

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two

More importantly, how can they be the premier space fighter of the Adeptus Astartes when the Imperial navy's premier star fighter is the 70 meter long flying gun-brick that is the Star Fury?

it seems really odd that this little flying gun-potato is competetive against a flier that's nearly the size of Imperator Titans.

Me too actually, add to that the fact that they're powered by turbofans. Which can't operate in the void, most Imperial Navy aircraft have small auxiliary rocket propulsion systems to return to their ship, but I havent heard ST have anything like that.

Storm Talons seem to be like Thunderbolts and Lightnings- designed for atmosphere, but capable of deploying from and returning to orbit. They frequently escort Thunderhawks to keep the larger transport fliers safe.

They're capable of entering the atmosphere from space because their armor is melta/heat resistant. But I don't think they're meant to exit the atmosphere. They're ground attack with the capability for some anti-air.

Gonna agree that the storm talon is built for atmospheric operations. it's possiable it can operate in space but it might not be any good in space.

when it came out the general opinion was the stormtalon was more "attack chopper" then "A-10" let alone "F-15"

Opinions are not facts please don't confuse the two
