Honestly I would start by getting the necron battleforce and then get something else you like (models wise) and build up from there and learn your army piece by piece.
The necron codex really doesn't have a lot of bad options except for flayed ones.

If you just want to win there are plenty of net-lists out there, but if you are playing with friends (or whoever) its funner if you use the stuff you like.

"Can we stop saying CCSM and CSM to just say CSM and SM? I mean really, don't we already know they have a codex? Plus my colon key is broken."

I agree Necron battle force box is a great start. Do you have the codex and rule book?

Without rule book and codex you looking around $500 Cnd to start and pushing $600 if you need to get the codex and rule book as well.

Never was cheap, but even more expensive than ever when considering all the rules and books you need to buy now, depending on how much of a completionist you are, or what rules you want to play with.

Agies Grimm:The "Learn to play, bro" mentality is mostly just a way for someone to try to shame you by implying that their metaphorical nerd-wiener is bigger than yours. Which, ironically, I think nerds do even more vehemently than jocks.

Everything is made up and the points don't matter. 40K or Who's Line is it Anyway?

After the battle force I'd grab a box of Immortals, a Night scythe, and a Annihilation barge.

Immortals will be in a unit of ten (useless as 5 in my opinion) and you can transport them with the night scythe.
The annihilation barge comes with a Overlord/Lord which you can use as your hq

After that allot of people like wraiths so you can add those a little farther down the line, also destroyers are cool.

A little later you could also grab another battle force and have a pretty large army
